Still Good To Be Bad

Warner Music Japan 2011

It seems like an odd time for an expanded version of "Good To Be Bad" to be coming out, what with a brand new album to promote. But this is Japan, and they do things differently over there. But is it worth it? Well, of course not, unless you're an absolute fanatic. Like me.

So what are you getting for your yen? Well, The CD+DVD contains a 15 track CD featuring newly recorded, remixed & remastered versions of 'Ready To Rock', 'If You Want Me', 'All I Want Is You' and 'Dog', all of which have been re-recorded with new (now old) drummer Chris Frasier. All of those originally appeared as bonus tracks on the "Live In The Shadow Of The Blues" live album. Can you spot the difference? Um, no.

Of much more interest is the DVD, although the inessential music videos 'Ready To Rock' and 'Lay Down Your Love' aren't worth shelling out for. What is worth the entry price is an eight song live acoustic performance with David Coverdale and Doug Aldrich, recorded at the Cutting Room In NY in 2008. Much like "Starkers In Tokyo", it's a wee gem, with Coverdale in good voice, the stripped down format really suiting him and the material. It goes all the way from 'Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City' through 'Fool For Your Loving', right up to the then new material.

There's also some extra you won't visit twice, with an interview by Eddie Trunk, the "Live In The Shadow Of The Blues" electronic press kit and a slideshow of live photographs from the 2008-2009 world tour. Quite why the Cutting Room material couldn't have been bunged out as mid-price EP is beyond me, but for now I'm clicking the play button again.
