SADIE JEMMETT The Blacksmith's Girl Wildflower 2011 ![]() See, it's not all aboot the kiddywinks. It would be churlish of me to advertise the age of a lady, but suffice to say that Ms Jemmett is not in the first flush of youth. And its her experience of life that makes these songs seem so vivid and real. Once upon a time, Ms Jemmett was in a band that I thought I had heard of, until I realised she wasn't actually in an American nu-metal band. After she parted ways with the band I hadn't heard of, she embarked on an interesting life, that ended up with her as the opening act for Judy Collins. Over to Ms Jemmett; "”I opened for Judy at a show at London’s Jazz café last year,” Sadie recalls. ”She appeared when I was sound checking, which was a bit intimidating because I’ve always regarded her as an inspiration. But she seemed to like what she heard and afterwards invited me to her dressing room, wanting to know all about me and the songs.” Fast forward to a record deal with Ms Collins label, Wildflower, and here is "The Blacksmith's Girl" in all its glory. And there is a lot of glory here, as there are some fantastic modern folk / singer-songwriter tunes on offer. It's a stripped down roots recording with acoustic guitars and pianos, mandolins, and even some brass added here and there for colour. There are highlights a-plenty, with the single 'Up On The Heath', 'So I Begin' and 'River' the tunes I've returned to most often. She's currently on the road supporting, wait for it. Aled Jones! Yes, Aled Jones. So if you can't be doing with that, keep an eye out for solo dates, and get a hold of this record sharpish. Buy CD From Amazon |
