SPIRITS OF THE DEAD
The Great God Pan

Indie Recordings 2011

Hell yeah! The Norwegian psychedelic-stoner-folk-rocksters are back with a six track mini album, following on from their rather splendid début release. And if you were taken by that 21st century take on the early seventies, then you're really going to like this, as they ramp up the riffs and the production on this second helping.

It really is a beast of a sound, as the opening number 'Mighty Mountain' kicks in with a swirling blend of stoner and prog rock, chock full of killer riffs. The follow that up with a more intricate number in the shape of 'Leaves Of Last Year', which ups the weirdo quotient before 'Pure As the Lotus' arrives with another saddlebag full of pulsating riffs that should drive a needle straight into your brain.

The title track is the one where they get all trippy with lots of acoustic instruments and a belter of a guitar solo, before they let all systems fly on my personal favourite, 'Casting The Runes'. It's probably the most straightforward track on the record, which is why it appeals to my somewhat simplistic brain, but it really does grab you like an elephants trunk squeezing round your dangly bits. It's why the rawk was invented. The closing 'Goldberry' is where they exercise their prog demons the most, as they work their way through an epic eight minute tune that brings all their influences to bear in one sitting.

It's a monster, monster album, with something for everyone who dreams of Blue Cheer doing the nasties with Hawkwind to a Leslie West guitar solo. And who doesn't?
