LESLIE WEST Unusual Suspects Provogue 2011 ![]() Bringing a whole new meaning to the word legless, the legend that is guitarist Leslie West isn't letting a little thing like his recent leg amputation get in the way of the release of his first solo album since 2005. A long-time sufferer of diabetes, West was aboard a flight to Mississippi to perform at the Hard Rock Hotel And Casino when the limb began to swell. He was rushed to the emergency room and lost consciousness. The decision to proceed with the operation was made by his wife, Jenni, who remarked, "It was his leg or his life." Thankfully, he's making a good recovery, and the praise that should greet this new album, will no doubt aid his state of mind. Because it's a cracker. West has co-written the majority of the songs, although there are three cover versions, and he's enlisted an array of special guests to grace the album with their guitar picking. So say hello to Billy Gibbons, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Lukather who all appear here. From the opening 'One More Drink For The Road', a piano driven tune that features Steve Lukather, the treats keep on coming. Then it's off into the 'Mississippi Queen' follow-up, the delightfully named 'Mudflap Mama', and it's the best tune that Slash has appeared on in nearly 25 years. Billy Gibbons brought a song along to the proceedings for West to add his own touches to, and the hard rocking 'Standing On A Higher Ground' is one of my favourites. The best of the covers is when Joe Bonamassa turns up to join in on the Willie Dixon tune, 'Third Degree' (which West has covered before), as the other covers, 'I Feel Fine' from The Beatles and 'The Party’s Over' by Willie Nelson are the only real weak links. Unless you count the closing 'bonus' track, 'I Don't Know "The Beetlejuice Song"', which is just plain awful. But for most of the record, the music and performances are simply outstanding. It goes from blues to rock, and even flirts with metal when Zakk Wylde turns up to shred on 'Nothing Changes'. Well, that's just not true. Ask Mr West how many legs he's got on the go these days. West is also singing better than ever, and the original songs here comprise some of the best material we've heard from him in decades. If you like classic rock, then you're going to love this.
