AOR Heaven 2011

Posted Image

I really liked the début album from Serpentine, "A Touch Of Heaven". In fact, it went beyond like. I said "If you are a fan of classic AOR, then this needs to be top of your shopping list, and it's certainly the best British entry in the field for years." Really, I gushed. So I was really looking forward to this. And this is almost as good.

It's odd, because the band are promoting an album featuring TNT vocalist Tony Mills, who also sang on their début, but he had already announced his departure, and the band had already announced a replacement before this one was recorded. He stays he will still be contributing on the songwriting front, but it's an odd position for a band to be in. But let's just enjoy this one for the time being.

It's another keyboard driven gem, with some exemplary work from Gareth David Noon. The production is worthy of any big budget release, so a smattering of applause is due for Sheena Sear, who has done a bang up job here. Their strain of hard, melodic rock could have come straight from the mid-eighties and can hold its head up, alongside the giants of the genre. As I've said before, Mills has only become a great singer over the last decade, and it's a real treat to hear him here. There are some really excellent songs, with 'Price For Love' and 'Forgotten Heroes', simply outstanding. The only song that doesn't really cut it, is 'Dreamer', but that's what the skip button is for.

It's going to be an interesting next step for Serpentine as new vocalist Matt Black takes over, because the vocals of Tony Mills are such a huge part of this record. For now, though, just buy and enjoy, another great offering from Serpentine.
