Transformation

Provogue 2011

Back out of jail, after serving time for a parole violation, Eric Gales doesn't let time go to waste, before proclaiming his innocence on the opening 'Railroaded'. It's the first of a few autobiographical tunes on his new CD, with the title track, 'Transformation', the best of them, telling the tale of the personal demons that led him down the path of drugs and prison. Hopefully, his assertions that he has seen the light will come to pass.

It's a stronger record than "Relentless", and his guitar playing is as good as its ever been. Mind you, he had his guitar in prison with him, and I'm sure there was plenty of time to practice while he was there. He won the Best Blues Player award in Guitarist Magazine last year, and you'll have to look hard to find a better one this year. Take a listen to 'I Pity The Fool'. and then point me in the direction of better playing. You'll struggle.

Elsewhere, there is a fantastic jazz tinged number in the shape of 'Double Dippin, whilst elsewhere he carries on from earlier releases in rock rooted blues. The best of this is probably 'Altered Destiny', which adds in some seventies psychedelic shredding to the mix. Mike Varney does his usual job behind the desk, and the other members of the trio, bass player Aaron Haggerty and drummer Steve Evans, do a bang up job.

As rockin' blues go, this is one of the best of the year.
