NEW TOWN KINGS
Mojo

Bomber Music 2011

Safe to say, this is not my normal cuppa tea. Heavily influenced by 2-Tone, New Town Kings are basically a British reggae band, and as anyone who witnessed the great Black Uhuru acid meltdown of 1984 will know, I have a long standing antipathy to all things reggae. I won't even by the sauce, as I'm feart the bottle will shatter from all the shaking that is going on. But this album is rather good.

it looks fantastic as you can kinda see from the picture above. The album is made up to look like a pretendy vinyl record, right down to the fake grooves and the label. Sweet. In fact, I spent about twenty minutes looking at it, before I dared to play it, so scared was I by the thought of reggae. But, the New Town Kings, a Colchester nine-piece (which is a lot of van farts), have put my mind to rest with this follow up to 2007’s "Sounds Of The New Town".

Granted, I'm not going to be handing in my air guitar and studded wristband just yet, but there was something about this record, especially on the slower (and I'm going waaaaay oot on a limb here), rocksteady influenced tracks. I'm feeling a wee bit light-headed now. Bear with me. The up-tempo numbers were, generally, a bit much for me, but there are some excellent tunes which would grace any summers day, if you're anywhere but here.

The brass session is particularly fine, and there is a clear sound and excellent production to layer the sounds just so. My skanking shoes may remain in the wardrobe, but my feet are dragging me in that direction.
