BUDDY WHITTINGTON
Six String Svengali

Manhaton Records 2011

It's album number three from Buddy Whittington, who spent the years 1993 - 2008 playing guitar in John Mayalls Bluesbreakers, and who was named by his ex boss of 15 years as possibly the greatest Bluesbreaker of them all . Of course, that didn't stop Mayall from sacking his entire band, including Whittington, in 2008. So, it was back off into the world of club gigs and a much lower profile solo career, the inevitable fate of the bluesman. Although he had plenty experience of that from his days with his own band The Sidemen, who did the rounds back in the eighties before opening for Mayall, leading to Buddy getting the call to replace Coco Montoya in 1993.

The Railway Inn, Winchester, The Half Moon Putney and The Belvedere, Billericay are a far cry from John Mayalls 70th birthday concert in Liverpool, which saw Whittington sharing the stage with Mick Taylor and Eric Clapton amongst others, but that's where he will be in 2011 promoting this record. And it's a mighty fine record. No one can have any doubt as to the guitar prowess of Mr Whittington, and he's shown himself to be a fine songwriter and a capable singer.

He's mainly playing Texas blues, with a few country licks thrown in here and there, and he and his band have got their blues chops down pat. He's got songs about love, songs about music, songs about the tax man, and even songs about guitars, so there's plenty to grab on to, with the best numbers being 'My World Revolves Around You', a splendid love song, the aforementioned guitar tune, 'Deadwood And Wire', and his tribute to the music of Texas on 'Texas Trios'. There's even a knowing nod to his old band on 'Back When The Beano Was Boss'. Although the Scotchman in me, got all excited about a song dedicated to Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx and The Bash Street Kids. Sadly, it wasn't to be.

He's also working in a trio format with Wayne Six and Mick Gage, who put in a good shift, leaving “Six String Svengali” as an album for anyone who likes their blues in early seventies style.
