JACQUI DANKWORTH
It Happens Quietly

Specific Jazz 2011

Now, see, this is just lovely. And I'm not just saying that cos' my Auntie Terry used to live next door to her Mum. Jacqui Dankworth has been building a name for herself in jazz circles for a fair few years now, and has long come out from the shadow of her parents. This new record sees her presenting some lush, orchestral arrangements of classics and originals, in collaboration with her late father, Sir John Dankworth.

There's an array of standards that are outstanding, including marvellous takes on 'A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square' and 'In The Still Of The Night' which are more than enough to convince that Ms Dankworth should be lauded amongst our best jazz interpreters. But the original material more than holds its own, with the title track and 'The Man', both potential future standards. The arrangements are immaculate with most of them handled by John Dankworth, along with his musical assistant Ken Gibson, and the musicians gathered for the recordings all at the top of their game.

The liner notes by Rod Argent say that her voice “is a voice made to sing standards...clear as a bell, with wonderful intonation", and there will be no argument from me on that score. It's a delicious record, certainly the best I've ever heard from her, and it's one that jazz fans should be snapping up sharpish. If you're still unsure, try and catch her on tour. I don't doubt you'll be adding it to your collection afterwards.
