If the name seems familiar, it's because, for thirteen years Heather Findlay was vocalist with UK progsters Mostly Autumn. Even if you didn't know that, you might remember the tabloid headlines when she dumped former Marillion vocalist Fish, shortly before their wedding. You can hear his version of events on hos "Dark Star" CD. Heather also has some dark things to say on this, her debut solo release, but in a much more oblique manner.

This five track EP is surprisingly hard edged, bearing in mind where she's spent so much time, and there is a rawness about it that takes you by surprise. It's produced by former Mostly Autumn fella Chris Johnson and although there are nods to her old band on a couple of the numbers - 'Seven in particular - Ms Findlay seems determined to make her own mark. There is some excellent guitar work from the much travelled Dave Kilminster (Keith Emerson / Roger Waters), and on numbers like ‘Red Dust’ she almost ventures into the world of rawk.

Ms Findlay seems to be enjoying the opportunity to stretch out a bit, and she is in very good voice indeed, with ‘Mona Lisa’ , the closing track, her finest vehicle, and one that makes a nod to mid-seventies Heart in its construction and delivery. There are no duds here, which is a more than encouraging start to her solo career. She seems to have gone a bit quiet since its release, but there are some live shows lined up for the end of the year, so hopefully there will be more music on the way as well.
