Rip Cat 2011

Oh, but this is a good one. A ripsnortingly barnstorming good one. So a big thank you to [koff] Big Son, Mitch "Da, Switch" Dow, Scott "Hot Rod" Lambert, the sadly nicknameless Ronnie Johnson and their special guests, including San Pedro Slim amongst others. The band say, "we gonna make ya jump n' shout!", and although I may be too emotionally repressed for that, they certainly caused a major burst of discrete toetapping.

The California based Mighty Mojo Prophets have taken West Coast blues, and given it a right good shake, as they embark upon a CD of red hot, swinging blues. From the opening 'Evil Sometimes' onwards, they grab you by the scruff of the neck with some of the finest blues I've heard this year. A lot of their songs are about the ladies, and they seem to be an absolute shower if the Prophets are to be believed.

They're just as good when they slow things down a notch, with the likes of 'Night Train' insinuating itself into your bloodstream, to the rhythm of the rails. But when they heat things up, as on 'Hoodoo Lover' and 'Carmen G', then you may as well surrender to the beat, as they're nigh on irresistible. The band are all top notch, and there is some mighty fine harp blowing going on, both from Ronnie Johnson and the guesting Big Rockin' Daddy. Best of all is 'Friday Night Phone Call', which is not only a killer song, but one that sees some amazing guitar work.

They're not reinventing the wheel, but they have taken it apart, put it back together, then blown it up with dynamite. Fantastic!
