DAVID MARK PEARCE Strange Ang3ls AOR Heaven 2011 ![]() Garn! If there is one thing guaranteed to get my dander up, it's people doing stupid assed things with the titles of their albums. I mean, how many times do you think I'm going to type "Strange Angels" instead of "Strange Angels"? Agh! "Strange Ang3ls". Git faced git from the git place. Anyway, if you've heard the name David Mark Pearce, it's probably been in the context of his guitar picking with the Oliver Wakeman Band. Of course, Mr Wakeman has been impersonating his dad Rick in Yes for the last wee while, so that gave Mr Pearce the chance to get his own melodic rock album up and running. To that end, he's enlisted keyboard player Lisa LaRue and bassist C.S. Brown, along with drummer Mikael Wikman. There's a guest spot from Oliver Wakeman, but it's the names of vocalists Goran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen) and John Payne (Asia) that will get melodic rock fans on the moist side. And it's pretty good. You won't be overly surprised to learn that the Payne tracks sound a wee bit Asia-like and that the Edman tracks sound a wee bit Malmsteen-like, but these are good things in the world of melodic rock, and it's a good thing here. The best Payne track is the pure AOR of 'Save Your Prayers', while over in Edman land, it's 'Eden Is Burning' which is the out and out winner. If you're not into the widdle, you'll be pleased to hear that widdling is not on the Pearce agenda, and that he is a much more melodic and tuneful player than Mr Malmsteen. It's a solid, sometimes excellent album, with tasteful guitars and some great keyboard work from Lisa LaRue, who has put out a fair few prog albums off her own of the years, and really shines here. So, apart from he title, "Strange Angels"? Agh! "Strange Ang3ls" is a winner. Buy CD From Amazon Edited by zeitgeist, Aug 1 2011, 01:23 PM.
