THE WATERBOYS
An Appointment With Mr Yeats

Proper 2011

Well known Scotchman, Mike Scott, hails fae ma hame toon, but over the years has devoted himself to many things Irish. And the latest of those, is the setting to music of the words of W.B. Yeats, the Irish poet. It's a project that has has a long gestation, going back twenty years or so, but it finally saw the light of day as a live show, in Dublin last year.

Seems that this project has been a passion for Mr Scott, who first put music to the words of Yeats back in 1988, on 'The Stolen Child', during the recording of "Fisherman’s Blues". It's nice to have a passion, but see if I hudnae been telt that, I wouldnae huv a scooby.

See, this is a good Waterboys album. No doubt about it. There are some cracking songs, which will have you smiling and crying. I liked the full on rock of 'A Fool Moon In March', and almost went as far as to love 'News For The Delphic Oracle'. But unless you're a scholar of W.B. Yeats, then so much of what I assume is the artistic process will be like pish in the wind. Musically, it's probably the best sounding Waterboys album in ages. The musicians, who include fiddler Steve Wickham, singer Katie Kim, flautist Sarah Allen and trombonist Blaise Margail do their thing in fine style, laying down a splendid accompaniment.

If Mike Scott is pleased to finally deliver his artistic vision, then I'm pleased for him. But to me, it's just a bloody good Waterboys album, but with even more peculiar than normal song titles.
