THE BASEBALLS
Strings'n'Stripes

WEA 2011

Here come The Baseballs with the follow-up to their million selling debut album "Strike!". That was a rare treat, as the German trio put their ’50s doo-wop spin on some contemporary pop tunes, something that saw them go platinum across Europe.

Naturally, the element of surprise has gone, so you're lift with the music, and none of the gimmick. However, it's still a thoroughly enjoyable romp through some modern classics and not-so-classics. Things get off to a bit of a false start, with the smutfest that is 50 Cent’s 'Candy Shop', but once they launch into Britneys 'Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman', things get back on track in a rather surprising manner.

Elsewhere, you'll find them taking on the likes of Lady Gaga’s 'Paparazzi', Katy Perry’s 'California Gurls', Uncle Kracker’s 'Follow Me' and even 'She Hates Me' by Puddle Of Mudd. Not everything works and I was underwhelmed by the Martin Solveig tune `Hello' and their version of 'Tic Tok' by Ke$ha, but there's an awful lot more good than there is bad. This is out in a couple of versions, but you really want the one that throws in five live tracks, which show just how good they are, especially the highlight of 'When Love Takes Over'.

It's a feel good album, packed full of great performances, some of which even manage to make bad songs become pleasurable. Good work, fellas.
