ELEANOR McEVOY Alone Moscodisc 2011 ![]() Eleanor McEvoy’s ninth studio album "Alone" sees her performing 12 stripped-down solo tracks, including the new single ‘You’ll Hear Better Songs (Than This)’, a revist to ‘A Woman’s Heart’, as well as a cover version of P.F. Sloan’s ‘Eve Of Destruction’, which was a hit for Barry McGuire in the sixties, as well as retreads of earlier songs, up to and including her last album, "I'd Rather Go Blonde". Ms McEvoy explains the album thus. "There was a time when I was stranded in a long gap between tour dates and, with time to kill, I headed for the peace of The Grange; a small studio tucked away in the Norfolk countryside. In the converted barn, alone except for Dave the engineer, I stepped up to the microphone and sang my songs. My state of mind wasn't the brightest, but there was a certain something about being in the studio with no agenda, no deadline, no pressure, it just came out." And there is a bleakness, a feelling of emptiness, and of longing across most of the songs here. Bereft of a band or additional instrumentation, you can hear the words more clearly and feel the depth of emotion. It may all seem a bit gitrly, but I was genuinely touched by a lot of the material here. The one new song, 'What's Her Name' (which has been played live in the past) is a worthy addition to her catalogue, and although the cover of 'Eve Of Destruction’ left me fairly cold, it's th eonly number that didn't touch a nerve. She's in excellent voice, and if you were hearing her for the first time on this record, then you won't hang about long before checking out her earlier work. Simple, affecting, and beautiful. http://www.eleanormcevoy.com/ |
