HOUSE OF FLUKES You're The King Wooden Clogs 2011 ![]() Did I like the single 'You're So Cool'? Um, "you have to be odd, to try and recreate eighties synth pop, but crossed with the Joe Dolce Music Theatre. Because that's what this sounds like. With added flute." Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but maybe there's more to Mr Joe Holland, who is House Of Flukes. And there is. Not much more, but definitely more. Thing is, it would appear that Mr Holland has no idea who or what eh wants to be. Now, I've nothing against variety. I'm a huge Des O'Connor fan, after all, but you need to have something to hang your hat on to. Here, however, I felt quite ill from all the spinning around I did, trying to keep up with the stylistic changes. In fact, the Stylistics may just be about the only thing not on this release. You get some blues, you get some jazz, you get some eighties synth pop, some acoustic country, some singery songwritery folk and some sixties pop, amongst others. However, you don't really get a sense of who or what House Of Flukes is / are. A couple of the tunes are good. I was well taken with '2012' and 'I'll Be Around', which highlight the blues and jazz influences. But then he goes all eighties on you, as the decade that taste forgot rears its ugly head on the title track and on 'World's Last Meal'. Which is just as bad as the title suggests. The production is a bit on the lo-fi side, but when he ponies up for some harmony vocalists, you can almost sense a good record fighting to get out. Ah yes, the vocals. Acquired taste is the polite phrase for it. It's not all bad, but it's not all good, which makes it the Stoke City of music. Maybe next season. http://www.houseofflukes.com/ |
