Das Contras 2011

Posted Image

Das Contras are a self proclaimed folk, funk, jazz, rock and reggae outfit. A description that scares the bejesus out of me, as it implies all the horrors of a fusion band. You know, the sort of band where they play all the right notes, but in all the wrong places. And there is a fair amount of that going on here. But only when they're not playing the sort of jazz funk that made slap bass two of the biggest bogey words in the nineteen eighties.

As it that wasn't a big enough sin, they are, apparently, not a band at all, but a collective. So I can hippy and liberal to the array of curse words I have lying in wait for them. It's not particularly well produced, and there aren't enough good songs to fill out a whole album. But when they get things close to the mark, as they do on 'Reckless Phase' and 'Animal', then it's almost possible to believe they have a future. Of course, then you get hit with some of the worst lyrics ever committed to record, and the good will previously generated goes right down the toilet.

I'm sure when you're in a drunk funk, in a basement bar, somewhere in Scotchland, then you'll tap your foot with some gusto, but in the cold light of day, there's an awful lot going on without anything actually happening.
