FACTORY OF DREAMS
Melotronical

ProgRock 2011

We're big fans of Factory Of Dreams round Zeitgeist way. The 2009 release, "A Strange Utopia" may have lacked the wow factor of "Poles" in 2008, but Hugo Flores and Jessica Lehto still punted out a top notch slab of prog-tinged symphonic goth metal.

And it's more of the same here, but with added mentalism, in the shape of a concept that involves the evolution of an electronic molecule into a living breathing entity. Now I'm not nearly smart enough to really understand what the hell is going on, but I do recognise good music when I hear it, and the complex, often bombastic hyperbole on display here is quite magnificent.

For sure you can see where the influences are coming from, be it Ayreon or Nightwish, but it's a magnificent sound, as it veers from prog to symphonic metal and all points inbetween. Straight from 'Enter Nucleon', it's full-on, pinning you to the wall, with the juddering rhythms, off kilter vocals and dramatic percussion. Best of all is 'Protonic Stream', an eight minute wonder which captures all the metal and prog into one fluid, dynamic whole, in a flabbergasting maelstrom.

It sounds huge, it's beautifully presented, and I couldn't find a duff moment on the entire album. You'll be hard pushed to find a better album of this ilk elsewhere in 2011, and it might just be the best Factory Of Dreams release yet.
