JAKE MORLEY
Many Fish To Fry

Sandwich Emporium Records 2011

Well now, this is rather a good start to the year. Which took me by suprise as the brief opening tune is a bit bland. But once 'Feet Don't Fail Me Now' arrives, with its mixtermaxter of Paulo Nutini and the soundtrack to The Lion King, things make a great leap forward.

It's the debut album from the British singer / songwriter with a rather natty approach to guitar picking, in this case, he taps it very fast with his fingertips whilst smashing out drum beats, while resting his guitar on his lap. Which is cute. Until you realise what an excellent guitarist he is. Then it's way beyond cute.

He moves about between solo tunes and band tunes, and if the former can sometimes be a bit too Jack Johnson / Jason Mraz for good measure, the latter are all top notch. Although fans of the aforementioned will find his warm tones and catchy melodies right up their street.

Me, I like it when he stretches out and takes a bit of a risk, as he does on numbers like 'Freddie Laid The Smackdown', the title track and 'Be With Me Once More', where the arrangements are much more adventurous, bringing the always excellent songs to life. Lyrically, Mr Morley is one of these fellas who's in touch with his emotions, so prepare yourself for a fair amount of girly greeting.

Regardless of my own preferences, there is no doubting that this is a very talented young man indeed. At it's best it's full of life and exuberance, and you'll be hard pushed to find a better debut album from a singer / songwriter in recent years, so feel free to give this one a go.
