Eight Legs vs. Volcanoes EIGHT LEGS - I Understand ![]() I'm not sure that it's a good thing for a band to highlight their musical involvement in an ant-binge drinking campaign telly ad. After all, isn't that all the kiddywinks do nowadays when they're not snorting horse tranquilisers and exchanging STD's? Apparently, they're a pop-puunk band which, based on this, came as a bit of a surprise to my ears, seeing as how 'I Understand' is a harmony filled sixties psych-pop tune that I thoroughly enjoyed, largely due to its unpop-punkness. The B-side, 'Stay Cool' is punkier, in that it sounds like a garage band, instead of a pop-psych band. Mebbe, I'm only hearing the music in my head these days, but this was a good 'un. http://www.myspace.com/eightlegs VOLCANOES - Shaking That Brass EP ![]() Now, see, that's cheating. I get myself all excited at the notion of a whole EP devoted to shaking that brass, but is there any brass shaking going on here? No. Gits. Instead, they've gone for that arty-farty, indie-rock thing that inky critics go slightly moist for, but that no-one ever actually busy. Remember The Maccabees? The Mystery Jets? Thought not. Unless you happen to have actually been in either band, in which case you might. But you don't count. On the plus side, when not layering watered down Robert Fripp guitar lines onto Franz Ferdinand bass parts, they do remember to put some actual melodies in. 'What You Came For' is the pick of the bunch, so if you want to impress you lazy assed student mates, check this out. Even if they do pronounce 'trouble' as if it were a Russian currency. http://www.volcanoesband.co.uk |
