JOHNNY ENGSTROM BAND - From Birth To Chaos

Posted Image

Why, it only seems like May 2008 since I last reviewed an album from the Johnny Engstrom Band, when their debut "Analyse My Dream" popped through the letterbox. And despite the fact that my name is misspelt on their MySpace page, this is an excellent follow up to what was an excellent debut.

It's still all a bit Rush like, though minus the canine botherwing whelps of Mr Lee, and the band seem to be settling into a very accomplished melodic prog groove, which makes a pleasant change from the interminable widdly techno gubbins that so many prog acts get up to.

The production is a lot better than the debut, which helps the individual performances stand out, and from the opening 'Future Tales' onwards, you're in for a treat. There's a lot of mellowness and melancholia on display, and with Mr Engstrom in fine voice, it's a pleasure to kick back and listen to tunes like 'Variations Of You' and the epic 'Sound Of The Bell'.

Don't let this become an unknown pleasure, check it out now.
