SEAL CUB CLUBBING CLUB - Super Science Fiction![]() Well you've got to give them credit for the name, although it's not one that signifies any kind of longevity in the business we call music. You've got Nik who plays the guitar and sings, Si who plays, Andy number 1 on keyboards, John on bass and Andy number 2 on drums. They're very keen on you joining the Exeter Anti-Slavery group, something that surprises me about Exeter, although to be fair, I've only ever passed through on the way somewhere else. Obviously, I didn't look profitable enough. Oh, and the NME hates them, which made me much more receptive to this, their début album. Sadly, that was pretty much as far as we got along the road to friendship, as the one time prog / reggae band don't really follow through enough for me. I mean, it's alright, but I'm not entirely convinced I would go to the foot of the road if they were playing a free show there. And they should be better if the opening track 'World Of Fashion' is anything to go by. It's an absolute cracker, driven along by a fine bass line that could easily spell the word "hit". But then things start to go awry, and by the time I get to the "Radiohead but even shitter" sounds of 'Dawn Lamb' and 'P-S-P-M', I've pretty much stopped paying attention. Fair play, though, they do have a second good song in the guise of '3ft Of Air', so it's not all indie by numbers. However, they've been at this for a good few years now, so they should have the hang of it. Mebbe they should go back to releasing EPs, because there's a good one to be found in this album. http://www.myspace.com/thesealcubclubbingclub |
