STONE GODS - Silver Spoons & Broken Bones

An awful lot of people seem to be desperately willing Stone Gods to succeed. After all, it's been so long since a British rawk band made it big that even I have trouble remembering. And, no, Stone Gods predecessors The Darkness don't count in the 'making it big' league.

The "Burn The Witch" EP was good, if not great, and they wisely start the album with the EP title track, as it was by far their best tune. Shame then, that they think following it up with a Wildhearts cast off is a good idea. Actually, scratch that. 'Don't Drink The Water' isn't that good. Think of a Wildhearts cast offs Honeycrack cast off instead. And I can assure you, that's not a good thing.

'Defend Or Die' gets things back on track, a hulking beast of a track, and as close as they get to metal. Oddly, the band actually sound more at home on the mellower tracks like 'Magdalene Street' and 'Lazy Bones', something that may guide their future.

There's half a good album in here, and at least none of the songs drag on too long. However, it's a bit hit and miss, and not the killer album people want it to be. Whether they'll get another second chance is anyones guess.
