New Vinyl vs The Brascoes

New Vinyl - Makin' It Easy

Posted Image

I've listened to some really shite singles this year. Which all ties in with my theory that what's really killing music isn't downloading, it's music. It seems like the record industry have gone into a massive panic and are releasing any old keech in the hope / prayer that something / anything will stick to the wall, and keep them going for another wee while.

Week in, week out, I'm subjected to dire, indie dross, which barely deserves to be heard in a garage, never mind on a CD. Which brings me to New Vinyl, the band formerly known as The News, which doesn't bode well for any creative processes within their ranks. But what do you know! This is actually a cracking wee tune. One half sixties amphetamine fueled Who, mixed up with a healthy dose of Wilko Johnson guitars, slightly let down bu identikit vocals, but a definite winner. I was mightily surprised.

B-sides rubbish, but if they can come up with some more numbers like 'Makin' It Easy', they might survive the weekly cull of bands.

The Brascoes - First Impressions Of You

Sadly, the same can't be said of The Brascoes who sound like every other band out there this week (bar New Vinyl). I played this single three times in a row, and I still couldn't tell you a damn thing about it, save an overwhelming urge to buy something grey.

I think they might be a wee bit like The Futureheads (remember them, thought not?), but beyond the fact that they have a tune called 'Tina Do The Splits', I can find nothing interesting to say about them whatsoever.

A February number 1 album beckons.
