Eli 'Paperboy' Reed vs Morning Call

Eli 'Paperboy' Reed and the True Loves - Am I Wasting My Time?

Posted Image

Well now, as the purveyor of one of my favourite albums of the year, it is unlikely that I'm going to say anything bad about this. For sure, I would have picked a more up tempo number for a single release, although I am mildly stunned that a single was released at all.

Eli 'Paperboy' Reed and the True Loves gently sway their way through a brass punctuated sweet soul sound that puts all the wannabees to shame, but there's still time for Eli to sneak in a few righteous whoops and hollers, pleading and a-begging before the B-side arrives with a blast of live soul music.

'So Tired Of Wandering' was first (I think) recorded by Robert Ward on his "Fear No Evil" album, and although Eli doesn't have the pain or the pathos to quite carry it off, it's a mighty fine attempt. Now go buy the album "Roll With You". Hurry, fools.

Morning Call - A Little Late

So it's not really fair putting this up against the True Loves as soul beats indie every time. It's a Top Trump. But, game on from Morning Call, they make the effort with one of those strident, indie anthems that reaches for U2ness, clambers up to about Simple Minds level, then stumbles over a pile of Killers records, retiring hurt after the second round.

It's a wee bit Verve but with Pete Wylie singing, long lost fans of the Alarm were seen poking there heads from nearby sewers when I opened the window while playing this, but that magical something that would turn them into something really special seems to be missing from this release. Although, when they go into overkill around the three minute mark, I did perk up rather noticeably.

So, if they can take the last 55 seconds of this single and parlay it into a full release, we might talk again. B-side is more of the same, but even more 1982 U2 than the one before.
