Marti vs Answers On Postcards

Marti - September In The Rain

So have you been moping about the house waiting for the Tindersticks revival? Well, wait no more, because here comes Marti. Not Pellow, not Webb, just Marti. A they, not a he/she.

The brainchild of songwriter and actor Andrea Bruschi, it's all rumpled sheets, Autumn hangovers, thwarted love and a slightly jaunty hat. Which, from a distance, is all rather enjoyable. You wouldn't like to have to put up with the moody buggers on a day to day basis, as they mumble around quoting Baudelaire and dreaming of the Left Bank. Except in Italy.

If torch songs are your thing, and they should be your thing once a year or so, then this will keep you happy. Or miserable.

Answers On Postcards - She's All Mine

Apparently, this is feel good indie-pop. Strange, as I thought the phrases "feel good" and "indie-pop" were mutually incompatible. Maybe it makes sense in Stoke-on-Trent.

Anyway, I've been dared not to like this young talented bunch of guys, which is a pretty stupid dare, as I automatically dislike the young and talented. Pure, unadulterated envy at their youth and ability. Gits.

But I've been checking the mirror carefully, and my eyes have remained resolutely grey. Not a hint of green to be seen. Although I do like the military style drumming on lead track 'She's All Mine', even if the song itself is a bit too Razorlighty. Not a good thing. Now, if they'd worn uniforms instead of posing in an oh-so rock and roll manner, bottles in hand, I might have been more impressed. And that Yassar Arafat scarf is so last century.

Flip it over and it's time for 'It's That Time Again'. How did they know? Are the spy cameras back. Better refasten the tin foil. It's actually better than the A-side, and almost merits the "feel good" tag, bouncing away in fine style. It'll go down well with the eNeMeE crowd. At least until the Arctic Monkeys put out a new record. And at least they're not The View.

Hmm, not a high score, but a 2-1 win to Marti.
