I hit the play button and within seconds I'm thinking "why am I listening to the Beautiful South". Ten minutes later, I'm sitting on the bus, fishing around for the press release, and what does it say? "Girl harmonies...provided by former Beautiful South songstress Alison Wheeler". Spook! Although, if I were a PR person, I'd fight shy of the phrase "thinking man's Johnny Cash", in future. Really. Anyway, this is one hunnerd percent like the aforementioned Beautiful South, right down to the witty banter and wordplay, memorable melody and hummability. So, whether you like it, will depend on whether you like That Sort Of Thing. At least it's minus the smug punchability of the bloke who sang with BS, so that's a plus point. Flip it over, and the country quotient is upped on 'Out There', and I actually prefer this track, which forgoes the pedal steel and whips out some banjos. Always a good thing, although not if there are multiples of said banjo. That's just wrong. And don't start me on ukeleles. Top quality stuff, and muchly recommended. http://www.myspace.com/willkevans Reluctant Heroes - One Time Bomb Eh? When did they invent a bomb that you can use more than once? Cos that would be clever. Anyway, this is like the Levellers covering a Rancid tune, Which is an unusual mix, it has to be said, and one that will be far too nineties for any of the kids out there looking for a Blaggers ITA for the noughties. And if those cultural references haven't driven folks away scratching their heads, then I'm failing in my mission. The A-side is actually rather good, with subtle keyboards propping up the agit-punk ska hybrid tune, allied to a chorus that will cause mass outbreaks of bounciness at the student union discotheque and famine awareness sickathon. I should hate this, as Kerrap! radio have come out in favour, but the off kilter rhythms and arrangements, coupled with bouts of "woo-oohs" make it infuriatingly addictive. Fortunately, the B-side, 'Scratches' is rubbish, and has been mixed so low as to make it seem like a pressing plant error.
