The Zutons vs Celine Dion

The Zutons - Always Right Behind

Posted Image

The Zutons seem to have the natty knack of writing two brilliant singles on every album. Enough to make me head out and buy the album, only to be slightly disappointed by the end results. But this is a single. And they've done it again. As they launch headlong into a 1973 Wizzard glam rock stomper, I'm already thinking "hmm, mebbe I'll pick up their new album". So, before I get disappointed again, let me say how great this single is. After the Roy Wood bit, they head into a Glitter Band rhythm bit, before heading into a psychedelic space rock bit. All of which is great.

Over on the B-side, 'That's The Cost', it all goes a bit pear shaped as the lassie, whatshername, the saxophone player with the legs gets let loose in front of a microphone, over a morose pub rocker ballad that Ducks Deluxe would have been ashamed to own up to.

But 'Always Right Behind' is brilliant. Wonder what the albums like?

Celine Dion - My Love

Whither Celine? We love Celine. Nous aimons Celine. Where others have sneered, we have not so secretly swooned inside as she sings the songs that make the dark nights seem light. But she's gone been gone from public view a long, long time now. And the public are fickle. Which may be why this is trailing some kind of greatest hits collection thingy, hot on the heels of its parent album, the 2007 comeback "Taking Chances".

She pulled in big name songwriter, ex non-Blonde Linda Perry to see if some of that Gwen Stefani / Pink / Christina Aguilera magic will rub off. After all this is the woman who wrote 'Beautiful' for Christina Aguilera. Well, this isn't quite so beautiful. It's a serviceable ballad which doesn't ask very much of Celine. And that's a shame, because when Celine lets go, it's a thing of beauty.

The stripped back live version works a whole lot better, imbuing the song with a heartfelt emotion missing from the studio version. Hopefully, it works for we love Celine. But I have my doubts.

Technically, this should be a win for the Zutons, but we love Celine too much for her to lose, so a draw it is.
