Craig Johnston - Burning Time EP![]() S'mazin' how many top quality singer / songwriters there are out there that I and, by default, you, have never heard of. And here's another one in the shape of Scots born Craig Johnston. Which is odd as I always thought he was a South African born, Australian raised Liverpudlian who played football for Liverpool. But, I'm happy to stand corrected, I just hope he's lost the shaggy perm. So it seems that after jacking in the footie, Craig became a barman, as befits his Aussie roots, before moving into the world of nu-folk, adding in acoustic instrumentation to augment his somewhat fragile and plaintive vocals. The piano, guitar, cello lineup is unusual in the world of modern music and definitely helps him realise a distinctive sound. Of the four tracks on offer, lead song 'Two Words' and 'Made Of Stone' are the ones that really stand out, although none of them had me diving for the skip button. They're all simply constructed songs of life and love, but the arrangements and performances are outstanding. We like this. craigjohnstonmusic |
