Glyn Bailey - Songs from The Old Illawalla

Posted Image

In case you were wondering, the remote and exotic sounding Illawalla is in deepest, darkest Lancashire. Which is fine for those of you living in Portoviejo, Ecuador, but not overly exciting for those of who've been to Lancashire. Fortunately (for me), I won't take umbrage as I reviewed Mr Baileys previous album "Toys From Balsa", and can happily snaffle up some quotes from that as punishment.

Um, what did I say, oh yes, "part David Bowie, part Ian McNabb in delivery, it's the lyrics that lift the songs from good to very good. With a skewed slant on life, it came as a relief to open the booklet and find the words there, as I wouldn’t wanted to have missed out on some of them!" Excellent, 'cos that still fits nicely into a nearly-new, previouly loved review, without having to put too much thought into it.

However, I doubt there are any more songs about plastic bags, cannibalism and Laurel & Hardy in heaven, so looks like I will have to listen properly after all. Damn it. So we've got a pop at Yahoo! and their ilk called 'Yahoo!', which probably won't please Yahoo!, so I'd best stop typing Yahoo! before they switch off the internet just to spite me. For no apparent reason, he turns into a hybrid Scott Walker / Julian Cope on 'Kafkaesque World', a title worthy of a good horsewhipping. Oh, and we also have 'Zizou's Big Day', a song I could have lived without as it reflects on Zidanes final game. Sigh.

So. it's another good 'un, worthy of your attention if you're into that whole eccentric English songer / songwriter thingy. Oh, and I do like the faux Edwardian approach to sleeve notes. I'd doff my cap were I wearing one.
