Lee Newman - Happy Together: The '60s Songbook![]() Now this is an odd one. It seems too heartfelt to be kitsch or camp, but listening to this the day after watching a Val Doonican documentary made for one too many polyester flashbacks. Falling firmly into the recent vogue for revisiting songs of the past, this is a counterpoint to the mega selling Barry Manilow sixties covers album which put Mr Manilow back on the map, and comes full to the brim with songs that those of us who grew up in the seventies will recall from their mothers radio playing in the kitchen. For your money you're getting the likes of "Daydream Believer," "Never My Love," "There’s A Kind of Hush (All Over The World)" and "Happy Together" amongst 13 songs just begging for a sports jacket. The musical performances are nigh on spotless as producer Lauren Wild had worked on the Rod Stewart standards albums and brought along some of the same studio musicians for this. He's not the greatest singer you'll ever hear, but he has a warmth and affection for the songs that makes you yearn for a nice pullover and a rocking chair.
