Space Ritual - Satiricon DVD Well, it seems appropriate to be viewing and reviewing this in the week that BBC 4 screened a documentary on Hawkwind. Granted, it was a lost opportunity, wallowing largely in the Lemmy period and, without the presence of Baron Brock, a very skewed view. Bit, it was Hawkwind on the telly and the sight of some of the early band members would surely have acted as a salutary warning against indulging in drugs. Kids, don't do it! You might end up looking like Del Dettmar! Mind you, if I could guarantee ending up as purty as Terry Ollis at his age, I might fall off that wagon yet. Anyway, this DVD largely comprises a concert tecorded at the Buttermarket, Shrewsbury in 2004. Not quite the same ring as the Edmonton Sundown but, hey, you're getting half a dozen ex Hawkwind bods doing largely Hawkwind songs in the style of seventies Hawkwind, something you don't get much of from the real Hawkwind these days, so lap it up and enjoy. Wisely, the show has been covered in psychedelic effects, thus cleverly masking the passage of time, while Space Ritual rattle through 18 tracks including 'Born To Go', 'D Rider', 'Children Of The Sun', 'Orgone Accumulator' and 'You Shouldn't Do That', just to pick out my favourites. And the band do a rare old job of it too. with Messrs Crimble and Slattery, in particular, cranking it up to splendid effect. There's also a couple of interviews recorded the same year, which take up half an hour or so in which Nik Turner gets to vent his spleen (again), but go with it. Add that in to 2 hours of music, and you have a splendid release. People new to the music of Hawkwind may find this more representative of the music they heard on the documentary than more recent official issues and old timers will just rejoice in the memories.
