America - Here & Now![]() You have absolutely no idea what a huge relief it was when this album was released. After all, it's been a long time coming but finally I can take my America album collection out from behind that Neil Young album that everyone claimed to love, but no-one ever played. For too many years I've been forced to hide my admiration for their inspirational west coast rock and harmony vocals while my equally hirsute friends banged on about some lesser lights unfit to lick their boots. But here come a motley assortment of My Morning Jacket, Fountains Of Wayne, Smashing Pumpkins and, well, Ryan Adams, to add their touches to a stunning collection, with the delicate guitars of James Iha especially notable. Although it doesn't say much for the record company and their faith in Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, that they've appended a live album, chock full of classic America tunes, to try and lure in the punters. Not that I'm complaining. You can never have enough versions of 'Sister Golden Hair'. But the new music stands its ground well. Despite the celebrity guests, it remains very much an America album, largely written by the band and well up to their high standards. In fact, the only duff track on offer is actually the sole My Morning Jacket written tune. I was always more of a Gerry Beckley fan, and it's the songs he sings lead on that will end up closest to my heart with 'Chasing The Rainbow' and 'Always Love', bona fide classics. And now with a cry of "go hang" to my detractors, I'm off to dust down my well worn copy of the Russ Ballard enhanced "Your Move" album. ![]() |
