Wonderground - Become Water![]() Here's one to get the old comparison engine in a bit of a tiz. In some places they go for an Elliott Smith nu-folk style vibe - that would be 'Ground Floor', but then they'll turn around and dish up a squelchy Mercury Rev tune before whipping up some serious mellotron action. Which shows a commendable breadth of ambition from the California based quartet. Singer / songwriter Paul Schoemehl has definitely taken the long way round in his approach to his songs, generally eschewing the traditional verse / chorus / verse approach. Indeed on the highlight of this mini-album, 'Paint My Days In Color', he rises to the giddy heights of Mark Kozelek type arrangements and writing. And you don't get much better than the Red House Painters. But, and this is the important bit, no matter the left field approach, you're never too far away from a memorable melody to hang your hat on. They've been road testing this material around the Los Angeles area for a couple of years now, demoing it with engineer Chris Reynolds (who has worked with the likes of the aforementioned Elliott Smith and The Jayhawks), and it's been time and effort well spent. A very impressive debut.
