Unklejam - Love Ya![]() Sometimes a tune comes along that is straight from another planet. Some folks manage to spin their cosmic dalliances out for a few years, some for one song only, but it rarely lasts forever. Which is why we must covet this music while we can. The Temptations managed it for a few years, Rick James and Cameo managed to eke it out for a couple years each (and its the latter that sparks comparisons if you watch the video). The Commodores managed it between '74 and '76, Earth, Wind & Fire between '76 and '79. George Clinton never did, as the whole Parliament / Funkadelic thing was way too contrived, which is why so many white journalists rate it so highly. But up until now, no-one on this side of the Atlantic has managed to do it. Cymande and the Average White Band probably got closest for a few minutes each, but now here's Adonistar, Bobby Joel Stearns and Tyson aka Unklejam. And they have managed to conjure up a tune that transcends time and space in the same manner as the hallowed names above. For this is a sound that should really only be heard in your own head. It's far too dangerous to let something this damn funky out there in the world. The last thing we need is spontaneous outbursts of dancing. Especially from a nation of wiggas and Her Majesty Queen Joss from the Block. The flipside shows where they're coming from as they take on Bobby Womacks 1974 US hit 'You're Welcome, Stop On By', although it pales beside the original and their own masterful A-side. It may be that this is the one great moment they have in them. If it is, then so mote it be, for this is spectacular.
