Well, the kind of games (or not) that I'm currently into. The genre is popular in Japan, and is gaining popularity internationally. Visual novels are those type of games where you just scroll and scroll and read through lines of text, wherein you can or cannot affect the outcome of the storyline (through choices and decisions). Basically, it consists of these elements: the script, artwork, and the music and sound effects. The artwork and character designs are static, sometimes with very minimal animation. You can say it is something in between manga and anime. Visual novels are either commercially produced (e.g. Fate/Stay Night, Clannad) or of 'doujin' in nature (e.g. Narcissu, True Remembrance). Some VNs are so successful that a handful made it through other forms of media (Fate/Stay Night and Clannad in anime; Higurashi no NAku Koro ni in anime and live action). Most are ero-games and contain sexual themes that are intertwined with the story. I recommend these titles: Doujin Visual novels - True Remembrance Collage Narcissu Red Shift Higurashi no NAku Koro ni Umineko no NAku Koro ni Tsukihime (contains sexually explicit scenes, but can be optionally removed using a patch) Commercial VNs Ever17 Planetarian Clannad Fate/Stay Night (contains sexually explicit scenes) Utawarerumono (contains sexually explicit scenes) You install them in a computer, mostly in a Windows operating system (although some are available for Linux and Mac OSX). Those games are all in JAPANESE, but do not worry, English "fan" translation are available. You can find them (the games and the translations) on the WWW or in P2p or torrent downloads. Some of the games are still saved in my hard disk. Resources: www.vndb.org altogether.insani.org Wikipedia entry of Visual Novels |
