Yay! SLR thread!

Your photographs are so nice, guys! I want to learn how to take photos like that.

Thanks for making this thread. Your first photograph is sooo awesome. The colours from the lights, composition (esp. the backdrop!) , + sharpness of each person, so clear! Natalie likes.

Thanks for the links! I usually view "dpreview.com", it's a really good site *thumbs*

The photograph with the dragonfly (is it?) on the flower is really nice. Did you have to use some sort of macro lens? I don't know the correct terminology for digital photography yet. My newbieness on cameras... doh.

I'll be checking this thread everyday from now on. Haha, aw, now I wish I had a SLR instead of my Canon Pro 1. :huhuhu

I couldn't get close enough to use macro because A. it kept flying away which made it really difficult anyway, and B. it was about 2 metres out in a pond..

I had to zoom right in on it and get as close as I could without falling in, while trying not to make too much noise.. It took me quite a few tries to get a shot in focus..

I also looked at getting the Pro 1 before I came across the FZ20.. It is a great camera, and with some practice, you'll be a pro! ^_^

This is a good incentive for me to get active in my photography again. I've been a bit lazy of late.

I really love the contrast that you've achieved in the first 3 photos..

Shooting theatre indoors like that is a real art.. You've done a great job!

They are great photos! I particularly like Freeze.. Wonderful composure! ^_^

for you, nostalgia has an eery edge to it.. They are the photos you treasure, because no matter how hard you try, you can never replicate it.

Keep it up.. I look forward to seeing more!

I remember when I first learnt photography, I used my Dad's Olympus OM2. Which, if you're not familiar, is an ancient SLR.. I was terrible at correctly exposing photos, because there was so much trial and error involved. My first SLR was a Pentax MZ-50, semi-automatic.. I still have it at my Mum's place in Melbourne.

It's always best to learn the hard way, in this case on a fully manual ancient SLR.. That way, when you upgrade to a DSLR, you really appreciate it. I know I do..

Hooray for technology! :D

The stream of water falling down looks really nice. It fits well with the tinted blue colour of your photograph. The contrast is evident in this one. For the second photograph, I didn't know what it was until I figured it that it was bunch of 'stirring' sticks. Your third one looks very fine art-like photography. The faded colour overlapping each other really blends into the photograph's overall composition.

Wowow! You've got a great eye too! All of those shots are well framed, the seal has good contrast, as does the tennis ball. The lantern festival gate looks kinda scary, like walking through it will transport you to another dimension or something.

Your long exposures are well shot too. It's not easy even with digital to shoot good long exposures..

You've done well! I particularly like the second last one.. Are they menus?

Rather than photoshop them to fix contrast, which is cheating imo.. Try playing with your exposure settings, you'll be surprised how much of a difference 1 stop over or under can make.. It can make a postcard shot, an artistic shot..

Well, I don't know how use it properly. I just play around with the settings  ISO, shutter speed, focal distance? My camera doesn't work too well in dim areas, and create blurred images, grr.

Not many cameras work well in dim areas, and it's not often easy to compensate. In these cases, a tripod is your best friend.. Mine has real issues focusing in low-light..

Generally, digital cameras will get the contrast pretty close to postcard when set to automatic. All you need to do then, is adjust the exposure + or - a step or two to get the photo the way you want it.. The camera will give you a preview of how roughly how it will look..

You only really need to worry about shutter speed if you are taking long exposures or if you need a faster shutter speed (moving targets).. In these cases, use the shutter priority setting..

Focal distance depends on your subject, macro will allow extreme close-ups (photographing zits or flowers and stuff), down to ~5-10cm. Normal focal distance (without zoom) is around 30cm.

Here's a picture of my current camera.. It is about the same age as yours..

Your SLR looks nicceee.. Is Lumix part of Panasonic? Or is it a seperate company? Hm, yeah. I have lots of problems with the lighting when I take photos in a dim area. But I have a flash add-on half a year ago, but haven't had time to play with it yet. When I add it on my camera, it's so heavy! -_- I hate being small sometimes...

Oh, and I also find that when I took a photo that looks 'just right' (lighting-wise), it turns out a bit darker on the computer. I wish SLRs were as small as my camera... The Nikon D40 looks pretty compact, but I don't think it's as small as my camera.

rawr.. I'm a duck.

Lumix is the range, Leica make the lens (high quality German lenses), Panasonic make the electronics..

SLRs are smaller (and certainly lighter) now than the 35mm varieties. But keep an eye on the features.. Try to find one that has an O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilizer), they are magic!

About the lighting coming out darker on the computer, have a play around with your exposure settings should be a +/- button somewhere..

Flashes can often be overpowering, so if you're shooting something fairly close, get a piece of white paper or cloth to diffuse the light so it doesn't completely wash out your subject.

SLRs (my opinion) - The battle has always been between Nikon and Canon. In 35mm there was no question that Nikon were better. In digital, the tables have turned.

Nikon make 35mm cameras, that's all they do someone else makes their image processing tech. Canon on the other hand, make image processing devices (printers, scanners, photocopiers etc. etc.), so they have had time to perfect their technology.

When you are ready, read the reviews but most importantly, go and try them out! Reviews will give you an idea of how their images will come out, but only you can decide whether it feels right.

I hope all that helps.. :)

External flash/ flash guns are wonders!

Anyway, altho my DSLR has a built in image stabiliser, I'll say that it's nice to have, but not important, it'll prolly gives you ability to hand hold shots 1 or 2 stops (they say 3, but that's really pushing it) slower than the shutter speed of 1/focal length...

Let's talk about the 1/focal length rule of thumb since we're at it... Well, it's a rule of thumb anyway, so it's just a guide. What it means is that when hand holding your camera and to prevent blur photos from camera shakes (movement of the camera when the shutter is open, like those you get when it's dark or in-doors), generally try to shoot at shutter speed that is 1/focal length or faster. (I use focal length in 35mm equivalent, there's some debate here, but it's a rule of thumb, so no point make a huge fuss about it)

e.g. If you are shooting at focal length of 75mm, try to shoot at shutter speed of 1/75 seconds or faster... so that would be 1/90 second since there's no 1/75 secs for shutter speed.

However, sometimes it's impossible to shoot at such high speeds, perhaps because the images will be too dark with the shutter speed + aperture combination etc etc. So what can be done is like use a camera support like a tripod or monopod. Use a flash gun or guns to provide more light, use higher ISO etc...

Hahah, dunnoe if you can understand what I said. Anyway, all the technicalities of photography doesn't make a good photo. Many great shots are shot by breaking rules. Most importantly, is to have an eye for image, which I think Nat's been blessed with... And I'm lacking... hahahha...

p/s: And yeah, I hate how much my DSLR weighs with a lens, flash and vertical grip... And the body's partially metal, making it sturdy by heavy, prolly can kill someone by hitting him on his head with my camera. And I'm super tiny size as well... 168 cm... 51 Kg...

Whow, you guys know your photography. Thanks!

I been fiddling around with the exposure settings on the camera. I still got lots to try out on the camera. I seen pictures taking by this camera by professionals on pbase.com, and their photos look so GREAT. Here's a gallery of this photographer's work with the Pro 1: Click here!

Yep. I have an external flash. The Canon Speedlite 430EX, but I haven't really used it. I know, I should take it out RIGHT now, and play around with it. I should really read the manual book first... I'm a bit slow learning new stuf.

Flare
You're only 51kg. That's light. How do you manage to carry your SLR, lens, equipement then?!?! You must have super strength like YUI (guitar hardcase o_o). Hehe. Well, I'm 45kg only, so I'm lighter.. ;p

Nikon chips specially the CCD is made by sony, just like my sony alpha got the same chip with nikon D200 but the pipe line of the CCD to the board is different nikon D200 got 4 while sony a100 got 2, they produce same image quality but the noise and speed gives 4pipe line a bust! hehe

ohh yeah u might wanna open ur Canon 300D, the LCD screen is also made by sony hehee dont know with the rest of the Canon DSLR

If i got to choose a new DSLR i would get Nikon D200 (magnesium alloy + weather sealed ohh yeahh..) problem is.. too expensive!!! waaaa..

Well... I'm in the Army! It helps! Hahahaha...

Well, I usually use a vest for assignments, looks stupid but it makes accessing the stuff easier, and the load seems lighter as it's spread over both shoulders... And usually, I don't carry the tripod around...

magnesium alloy body... gives you aching arms after a full day shoot...I know...

edit: By the way, Nat, if you wanna know about some more of the technical stuff on cameras, shoot away... I admit I don't have much of an eye for image, but I'm quite okay with the technical stuff...

imo, Sony aren't in the business of image processing, but that's my opinion.. I think Sony are good in personal audio..

Nikon have some great cameras when you go >USD$2000 but anything below that (compact, entry-level DSLR) I think Canon have a better range. Like the Ixus series for compact, and Digital Rebel for entry-level DSLR.

Canon also make this:
