yup... i kinda felt the same way... the reality or the fact that she died didn't really sink in till her song got played over the radio.... well, when the song finally played... well, happy that her wish finally came true... but still sad that she died... |

It was just really tragic. I don't think the overall feeling and message of the movie could have been the same if Kaoru hadn't died, but I still wish she hadn't. :( |

I just watched this movie, and I must say that YUI is really very talented. She can sing, write her own songs, and she can act. Anyway, regarding the movie, it was really great! I especially liked the scenes where she played her guitar and sang. I always felt so happy when she's singing, haha! |

I havent tried the subs out yet, But they're present and eager on my desktop, THANKS SOOOO MUUUCH. Betty signed up to like 3 forums to hunt down these subs.
:D and usually softsubs do work even when theyre not on the original rip, because they have an option where you can offset the timing to fit your copy a bit. :DD Thanks again. Also, My memory is wretched, but I'm pretty sure this is the torrent I used for the spanish version. http://www.torrentz.com/torrent_1038367.html |

I watched it two weeks ago,, with english subs of course, and I really liked it. I picked up a few scenes from the movie, and I really thought Yui was really cute in this movie. There was a point in the movie where she almost looked like a stalker, but a cute stalker. |

I just watched it. I must say, it was very depressing in the end on the beach. Her dad at the hospital was a sad scene too. I have to buy this if i see it at J-Town. |

It took me a while to finish it, but I finally did (work and stuff in the way, bleh). I don't know if it's because I knew what was going to happen (Mari likes spoilers, btw) or if I'm just a big baby, but I started crying early on. I think I started crying when she tried to run home before the sun came up. Maybe. I cried up until just before the end of the movie... Strangely, I didn't cry when they showed her in the coffin with the sunflowers or when they were showing her parents, friend, and her boyfriend listening to her song. They weren't crying so it didn't seem as sad. Maybe they spent so much of their time mourning her while she was alive that they had run out of tears when she did pass. Iunno. Good movie, though I think at times it moved a little too quickly. And! I agree: she was a cute stalker! Lol. |

Although I do live in Japan I only got to watch it today (tonight). I feel completely churned up... It's really late now but I can't go to bed like this, all upset, my eyes slightly buffed. I say I'm upset (more sad than upset but still) because of the contradictory emotions fighting inside. My first impression was of pure awe. The quiet intro sequence sucked me right in even though I was at work, watching the movie between two classes (bad teacher!)... It occured to me YUI's natural beauty matched the simple, unpretentious atmosphere of the movie as a whole, as if Taiyou no Uta actually oozed "from" YUI. To me, this is the mark of a respectful director. But I would soon become very frustrated with not understanding Japanese too well. Of course, I knew parts of the story from hearsay, and although I kept away from spoilers for the whole six months, I expected the ending to be sad, with Kaoru most definitely dying (it's an Asian thing, really, the sick girl always die). So I was prepared to hear combinations of words like "song" and "sun" and "disease" and about another two dozens simple words. Seventy percent of the dialogue obviously escaped my grasp so I'm not quite satisfied with this first experience. Any discussion with the doctor or between the parents' and Kaoru's friend were out of my reach. The emotional charge would have been much greater had I understood everything. But it was my choice to watch it today in little bits at a time, finishing up at 1:00AM, because I just couldn't wait anymore. So I guess I'm frustrated at myself for not learning more Japanese (on top of my job). I laughed heartily all the same, during the funny scenes everyone mentioned. I think that Takashi should have paid, instead of being paid, to act in this movie - I mean, he got to pinch YUI's cheeks (!!!) AND kiss her! Am I green with envy or grateful to have seen this on screen? A little bit of both. The kiss in itself was lame though. I push my face against your face with the rest of our bodies a meter apart. It's often the case with rookie actors. Other cinematographic tidbits disappointed me, like the girl friend over-speaking her lines always a half-second late (maybe it's her acting "style"), and the mother's character being reduced to a somewhat erased stereotype of the Japanese housewife. When they drive Kaoru to the hospital, I found the car to be quite ill-protected from sunlight, just thin translucent curtains over on the sides? Ticked me off a bit. I also wondered why they insist on showing Kaoru running around so much, when YUI doesn't seem too keen on running herself (but she does a better job at it than say, Sarah Michelle Geller - god how stupid she looks with her arms flailing around). I was nevertheless positively shocked when she just bumps into Kouji and procedes to introduce herself completely out of breath. "I'm Kaoru Amane and I don't have a boyfriend!" My my my what I'd give for YUI to do that to me... The pace and length are slightly off in my opinion. Either the second half ought to be 20 minutes longer, or the first half should be shortened. From the moment where Kaoru barely makes it home to hide from the sun, the chain of events is a little too hurried for my taste. I wouldn't have minded a longer ending, with an outdoor funeral in blinding sunlight... Of course, there were other scenes that more than made up for the few mistakes. The beautiful intro, moving the bus stop sign, pouting at the bus stop sign, the numb hand tantrum (to which I can somewhat relate to) and the god-awful walk on the beach. I say god-awful but I liked it because it was meant to look pitiful. I was quite surprised with how good the soundtrack was, and I mean the non-guitar, non-YUI stuff, which complement the movie really well. I especially like the part where Goodbye Days fades out, to become muffled voice only, and then a string ensemble rendition kicks off. Very well done indeed. It help adding to the credibility of Kouji's (sudden) feelings for Kaoru. Being rocked back and forth from envy to light-heartedness to frustration to awe to depression made for a very intense two hours of movie watching. I needed to blow off the steam before turning in. Sadly enough, no one in my entourage (especially not back in Canada) can understand any of this, so I thought I'd write a post and get it out of my system. I'll be focusing on work over the next few weeks but I promise myself to watch the movie again (with subtitles, hopefully) over the holidays. If YUI remains the only thing I keep from my two years in Japan, it'll have been worth it. The girl bewitched me. It's too bad that her songs are impossible to karaoke (for most guys anyway). Now... does anyone have a lesson plan I could use in about six hours? (bad teacher!) |
| I feel ten years younger. This is very wrong. | |

I just wanna say I've read your post  YUI will be the only 'thing' that makes me wanna go to Japan so badly :huhuhu Make sure you watch 'the making' of the movie as well, it'll make you appreciate the movie even more. As for the car thing, the one in drama looks more sophisticated lol. |

Adults, I once wished that I don't have to become them But I will turn 20 Thank you My teens -- YUI I rant about YUI in this Blog | |
