Through a suggestion made by firefly, I decided to make this topic thread the place where whomever has seen "Taiyou no Uta" can discuss the film with one another. Any aspect of the film is welcome to be talked about here, whether it's an opinion about liking/disliking the film, or if it's a question (perhaps about something that was not understood cuz of the language barrier) that needs an answer, or anything else. It is better to talk about such matters here rather than posting it in another thread, cuz even the slightest spoiler may upset somone who hasn't seen the film yet. Here are a few rules that I made for this topic thread and please follow them, if you choose to participate in this discussion: 1. IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM YET, I would highly advice you to NOT continue reading this topic thread as I'm sure it will contain some major spoilers of the film. This is a warning. The choice is up to you, if you care about spoilers or not. 2. Please do NOT ask where you can download the film from here in this thread, and please do NOT post any kind of link where you can download the movie from. 3. This topic thread is NOT the place to discuss the "Taiyou no Uta" dorama series version. It's only for the movie. Without further ado, and don't say I didn't warn you (to those who haven't seen the film yet but wish to read on), let us begin our disucssion!!! :) EDIT: I will still post my in-depth but NON-SPOILER review of the film in the "All About Taiyou no Uta" thread sometime this week, for all of you who haven't seen the film but want to know more about it. :) |

yay i guess ill go first! well first off i loved the movie... it was a lil long and kinda dragged on a bit... (i think the movie could of been about 1h and 30m instead of about 2h) but that didnt stop me from watching it 7 times. since it was in Japanese i couldn’t really say if YUIs acting skills was bad or good... but from what i watch, the way she spoke and reacted to everything... really drew me into the movie... however since ima hardcore YUI fan i dont know if that feeling is only for me or the same for everyone else.. but my favorite scene was the strong emotion she delivered in the my-hand-cant-play-guitar-anymore scene... from the part where she goes into the bathroom and the shot is on the mirror with YUIs face on the side of it…then the camera goes from out of focus to in focus of her face... …the ways she looks at her hand really built strong tension... then my fav part was when she plays her guitar so violently and emotionally... yah... that was very wow for me... much much props for YUI... Go taiyou no uta! |

a whole bunch of super kudos to blue cat for starting the topic. thanks man! Again ppl, heed the warning, SPOILER WARNING! :biggrin Only watched it 3 times, the first two on the same day when I wanted to see YUI in person, at Ikebukuro sunshine cinema. think i've mentioned already that YUI in person is kawaii to the max! my take on the movie? the movie had a somewhat slow, artistic pace to it, especially in the beginning. it's a more "visual" movie, meaning that a lot is expressed in the character's actions moreso than dialogue. you could probably understand most of the movie, even if you didn't understand a single bit of japanese :) overall, i loved the movie. very simple and touching. not great but more than satisfying. out of 10, i would give it a 7.5 or close to 8. comments on scenes - lots of cool scenes, including the "numbed hand" scene br4d137 mentioned. the "moving the bus stand post" scene was cool. Kaoru's (YUI) "out-of-breath introduction" to the fallen Koji (Tsukamoto) was pretty cool & funny. Kaoru's (YUI) face when the bus stand post was moved back was a real gem!... too many good scenes actually! - my favourite scene, being the romantic that i am, was the "kiss" scene. From Kaoru's (YUI) teary eyes, to Koji (Tsukamoto) pulling her cheeks, to his "Hen no kao" (weird face) remark, to her saying "Hidoi" (cruel) with a straight face (no, sorry, straight mouth! haha), to them kissing... it's just a perfect scene - funny :D & romantic  - one scene also really affected me. before watching the movie, we had seen all these sunflowers on the ads, flyers, posters, etc. the warm look of the flowers did kinda give a feel-good feeling. but when i saw the movie and realised the flowers were from Kaoru's (YUI) coffin, covering her body, i just couldn't help feeling sad, a real contrast. now when i see the flowers on the ads, flyers, posters, do feel kinda sad.... :( - i have to admit, the girl is specs (played by Toriyama Airi)... is pretty cute actually! though i still wuv my YUI! :D |

ahh i forgot about the ending scene where she was on the beach!! that was my fav too.. it was such a sad thing to see YUI in her suit and struggling to move around... and when she pretend to trip i nearly jumped out of my seat... but then she was like Nantsuute (just kidding) it really broke the moment and made me smile... Uh oh... This is my 666th post!!!!
 666. It's here... :scare Better make a new post, so it can disappear.
Here's an answer. :) I noticed that there are some people (and many people all over the net) that have managed to watch the film w/o English subs, by downloading the file from various places. So even though firefly and I (blue cat) were thankfully given the luxury of watching the film at a theater in Japan, we're definitely not the only ones who watched it. On the top of my head, it's obvious that Brad has watched the film (7 TIMES!!! Wow, I still can't believe it but at the same time I can!!) and I know that Reset has seen it. So, in a nutshell, there are people who have seen the film (even though they are not in Japan). ;)
Interesting. I thought it should have been longer!! It never dragged one second for me. To me, it was a lot shorter than I was expecting since most Japanese films tend to be on the VERY long (over 2 hours), slow-paced side.
I definitely think her acting was good, esp. for her acting debut. She was very natural; although, it's true that she was pretty much playing herself.
"Rack Focus", maybe? Probably. :P
You're very welcome, firefly. The pleasure is mine. :)
I've only seen it twice. The first time on the day of its release, June 17th, at the Kahim Makuhari Cineplex. The second time on July 2nd, at AMUSE CQN in Shibuya.
I agree. It definitely had a very visual, artistic feel to it. Similar to style of the "Sekachuu" film version. The whole film had a very tranquil and beautiful vibe to it. "Taiyou no Uta" definitely DOES rely heavily on emotions and actions. I love dialogue-driven films but I also love films that are able push dialogue aside and allow the atmosphere, as well as the characters' actions and expressions, to do all the "talking". A great example would be the Korean film, "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring" (directed by Kim Ki-duk). Anyone seen it before? It's a great and extremely beautiful film.
For me, 9/10. :)
I don't want to come off as having a stick up my ass or anything, but one small correction, firefly. I believe it is "hen na kao". ("na" instead of "no"). ;) My two favorite scenes in the film are: 1. Kaoru's last scene. When Kaoru does the cheek thing to Koji on the beach, and she says "hen na kao". And then she lets out this really childish but cute giggle. Both times I saw that scene, and heard her say that (and giggle like that), it just killed me. The peak of sadness yet happiness I felt beneath my skin; emotions building up uncontrollably. :huhuhu 2. The "Street LIVE" scene in Yokohama. I love the short montage with "Skyline" playing in the soundtrack, which then segues into Kaoru performing the song to everyone. And then, the best part is when, the other guys performing around the area start jamming with her. I LOVED the bass player who was really into it, rocking out to the song. It was awesome. So feel good. :) GREAT COMMENTS Brad and firefly. Keep them coming, everyone!!! Whether its complete praise or harsh criticism, it's all welcome. |

I like the movie as a music video story more. YUI acting was good becouse she more less play herself in the movie. I think the director also said something like YUI was born for this role or visa vesa. My favorite scenes in the film are all that with YUI in it :P I really like her *_* face so cute. And the scene where after her move the bus stand post, next morning her friend come up and she turn away from sad face to surprise face to smile and hind away face. Oh, I have watch the movie about all week, I had it play continues at work all week :P |

I'm not pro about commenting a movie since I'm not really into watching movie. I'll have my oppinion depends on I enjoy it or not.
:P For me I enjoy this movie very much, especially in the middle and last scene. I didn't like the intro tho. Its a bit boring. I love it the way YUI act. Ow I can really see an ordinary japanese girls in her act. My fav sceen is the same as blue cat :
plus... 3. When the street sign was moved and YUI saw it from afar. The expression is quite funny, like there in Brad's avatar. Hahaha... 4. The very last scene. When Goodbye Days was played all-over the radio and her family and friends noticed it. Its the most touching scene I guess. :) Yea, I enjoy the movie a lot! :) |

blue cat, thanks for correcting me. yes, it should be "hen na kao" coz "hen" is a na-keiyoushi (na-adjective). for all you japanese learners out there, if we want to join a: - na-keiyoushi (na-adjective) like "hen" with a meishi (noun) like "kao", we use "na" - meishi (noun) like "Taiyou" with a meishi (noun) like "Uta", we use "no" - i-keiyoushi (i-adjective) like "omoshiroi" with a meishi (noun) like "ongaku", we don't need to use any particle. translations: hen - weird kao - face taiyou - sun uta - song omoshiroi - fun/interesting ongaku - music ok, back to the topic. yes, the scene when Kaoru was at the beach, pretended to fall, pinched Koji's cheek and said "hen na kao" was really cool. the scene with YUI's "Skyline" song was great. because of that scene, i absolutely love this song now! another scene i found really cool & funny, was when Kaoru went down for dinner and found Koji there as well. she rushed back upstairs, seemingly upset. but then she came down, all dressed and nice! "wanna look good for my boy, eventhough i'm mad at him!!" heh heh. really funny that scene. btw, does anyone know the "specky girl" character name, played by Toriyama Airi? |

this thread is now non-spoilable for me! I just watched it once so far... Its hard to NOT watch it as a YUImovie at first huh? I mean from the beginning of the movie when i saw her face in it I couldnt help but to smile thinking... "YUI!!" haha... :swt I shall watch it again... It really isnt that wordy of a movie is it? Even I understood more than "La La La La~ with you." XD haha but of course i would... I took a semester of Japanese... ;) I really need to brush up on it though... For me, it did seem a bit long, but probably cause American films are long at 2 hrs and rarely go beyond that, I think. Long or not though, I enjoyed it for sure. Next time though, I should really try harder in seeing it as a film itself, right? :bash It does a good job pulling out your emotions. I held back on the tears... but I felt them on their way! :huhuhu that last scene of Kaoru really did have a bittersweet feel to it, huh? It kills you indeed. edit: THANKS BRAD AND RESET!!! |

This movie it's a bit slow in the beginning, but the plot and the storyline is so well-doned, I really liked the final, all hearing the song was really touching, because Kaoru wasn't there anymore T_T. It has many funny moments, like the Kaoru's intro to Koji and the bus stand post scenes^^ What I really liked was the scenes where YUI was saying everything only with her facial expressions, pretty good knowing that it's her debut right?^^ And it's very hard for the parents know that her only daughter has a disease, It's very touching the scene with Kaoru's father saying "Why my daughter" or something like that T_T Overall 9/10 I think ^^ Somebody knows when the DVD is out? I want to buy it!! |

Woot, I've been waiting for this kind of thread! Anyways, most everything have already been said, the moving sign, the pouting, the pinching... etc. but I'll still go ahead and give my review of it. The movie "Taiyou no Uta" have many elements that makes it an artistic movie. Many people mentioned before that the beginning started off slow, and I must agree. Thought I must say that this slowness must be intentional. The actual movie actually starts after Amane Kaoru wakes up for a breakfast dinner (of course the title of the movie shows up later than that, but i don't care, this is my review damnit!). The beginning of the film is to set the tone and the mood for the entire movie. Here you have this girl who secretly admire/like a boy from far away, but she can't do anything about it, why? The film shows that a whole day went by before Kaoru wakes up again. Up to this point anyone, even one with out any prior knowledge of the movie, will think that she has some kind of sickness for her to sleep in the day. Basically before the "real" start of the movie, the audience know that she's a girl that can't be up in the day, and she likes a guy hat wakes up early. The audience can tell that she really wants to be with him since she went and sat on the spot where he was sitting (i forgot if she bought the same drink or not). But she can't because the elder policeman happens to know that she has the XP disease and is allergic to the sun. I must mention now, that this theme, or icon of a sun is shwoen throughout the whole movie. The beginning scene where a whole day has passed shows the sun at different spots of the sky and the streets of that time period. Anyways, we see that Kaoru plays really good guitar before the directors say that it's the beginning of the movie. I won't summerize the movie since it you're reading this thread, you've watched the movie already, so I just want to talk on this theme/icon of the sun. After the title screen, I think the first mentioning of the sun is when the guys was surfing. One guy went "hey isn't the sun a little too high?" (or something to that extent) showing that the sun is important to them. They notice the sun a lot since they go surfing in the morning a lot. so this surfer, Fujishiro Kouji, is represented by the sun. Kaoru is the moon. In all the scenes of Kaoru by herself, the lighting is dark or cool-ish. Kouji is bright and warm. When they meet (for reals, on the bus bench) the scene is bright, but kinda cool-ish at the same time? Anyways, when Kouji took Kaoru to the city, all the lights of the city makes the night really bright. This is also a contrast to the place where Kaoru normally plays guitar. If you will also notice, Kaoru plays her songs in front of a large sunflower bill board thing. Since Kaoru can't be in the sun, the sunflowers are the sun's icon. This scene is where the sun is being with the moon, Kouji is being with Kaoru. Ofcourse the sunflowers are back when Kaoru dies (tear), in my oppinion, that means she's finally able to be in the sun. At the end of the movie, Kaoru's desire is to "live on". The audience knows this since she said to her father "I want to live on". Anyways, I really enjoyed the scenes after Kaoru dies. She lives on in the hearts of her friends and her parents. Kouji kickes at the cigarette butts before playing Kaoru's song, very much like the way Kaoru kicks the butts away before playing her guitar. Her friend is listening to Kaoru as she walks down the street where Kaoru was taken to when she did the live. These two scenes show that through her song, Kaoru is living on. Eventually, this song gained enough fame that a radio station is playing it. The radio that doesn't used to work in "Kaoru resturaunt" is now working, I would like to this that this radio is meant to play Kaoru's song. In the whole movie, I loved the las scene the best, eventhough YUI's not in any of it, the part of her that I loved first, her voice, is. Sorry it's so long, but I really enjoyed the movie. |

I saw Taiyou no uta last week and all i can say is that this movie got a great impact on me...It was so touching! Now i'm like "ok we never know what can happen, so if you have dreams, try to realize them! Do what you can, live your life as you want. Nothing is impossible" The movie gives a really positive message even if it's a sad movie. So here are the scenes i really like : - when it's dinner time and YUI is in pijama while the guy she likes is in the dining room with the family! You can see YUI go upstairs and then go downstairs again. She changed her clothes!and she is "adjusting" her hair! It's really funny scene  - the pouting scene - when the guy pinched her - when she meets the guy : "I'm kaoru, 16 years old, i don't have boyfriend, i like bananas etc! so funny  - i like the part with "skyline" song :) - the scene on my beach made me cry T_______T - of course, the goodbye days part at the end T________T Now this song is more than special for me :huhuhu Funny thing for me : at night, i sleep in the same position as YUI's character! On the right with the sheet til my nose ^^ lol |

YUI is LOVE
![]()
|
I just watched this evening while my sis was taking a nap. It was excellent man. The story and YUI. I totally melted when she pouted and when her face is pinched my Kouji (KILL HIM!!!!) Last part totally killed me. From the beach to all the way end I became very emotional and teary. It started with the father telling Kaoru to take off the suit. Few drop of tears came down. Then when it came to the chorus of Good Bye Days I teared like T-T I have to agree that it was bittersweet for this ending. But just cant help it, T-T The scene when she was being skeptical about her hand and strummed the guitar continuously really pained me =o What I enjoy most throughout is really her expressions man. Be it singing or acting. For the PVs MVs and lives as well =x On the whole i thought this story is very much purer compared to the drama version. I'm on ep 4 for it and i'm quite curious what will Kouji turn out to be like. I have to say you would want to protect YUI more than Erika as Kaoru. She's terribly........ LOVABLE |

Well, this is my first time posting but omg, I couldn't resist to the temptation to watch the newly downloaded "Taiyou no Uta" on my harddrive even though I was supposed to be cramming for a Physiology exam so yeah...I watched it. Well, I have to say that I did not find that the movie dragged at all! It may not have been an action packed movie, but it was a very beautiful (and as everyone else mentioned) an artistic movie. I really have to give kudos to the young director (holy cow, he's only in his early 20's) for all those symbolic scenes as well as attention to every detail to ensure that each thing in the movie had a specific meaning (I mean, the coffin filled w/SUNflowers...that's really creative). And I also have to commend that he made the storyline so special. This kind of storyline has totally been overdone...sick girl meets boy, they fall in love, her condition worsens...she dies blah blah blah. It was done in movies like "Love Story" or "A Walk to Remember" but what I really admire is that the director managed to keep it FRESH. It didn't seem old and unoriginal. You didn't notice that the underlying story plot was very common...he was able to give it an unique twist which is very admirable. The way he chose to shoot it was also great (having a lot of time put towards having the actors talk into the camera instead of having a shot further away) I also love the light-heartedness and comedy aspect about this movie that heavily focuses on love and life. In comparison to the drama (I promise not to talk much about it), the movie really gives a very comfortable FEEL. That's what I appreciate about it...it's not another heart-wrenching love story. Although the ending is bittersweet, it's a good ending...one that makes you smile and cry at the same time. I thought YUI's acting was quite decent for a newbie and yes, Kaoru's role was really tailored for her...the music and soft-spoken personality. I also believe that Takashi made a pretty good Kouji...very believable as a surf obsessed baka...and I liked the dynamic btwn YUI and Takashi...awkward as it should be in a first relationship...yet sincere and real. As for favourite scene...I'd have to say every moment of the movie for me was LOVE...but the scene that really cracked me up the Kaoru first meeting w/ Kouji...I *heart* "My favourite food is bananas", lol. And the ending where her music was spread around was really touching...and the sunflowers in the coffin...the way they focused in on the flowers and then panned out...WOW. So I'm gonna stop here b/c I'm just gonna keep on rambling if I don't. Sorry about the uber long post but I give YUI's debut movie, "Taiyou no Uta"   Yay! XD Can't wait 'til the DVD comes out! :guitar |

YUI Lover

Finally saw the film after months of waiting and I must say that I enjoyed it so much! I thought it would be a cheesy flick the likes of those made here in the Philippines. Surprisingly, albeit the noticeable theme which is love, the film, at least for me, went more on the art side by focusing more on visuals than on dialogues. YUI is so kawaii! :horny It looks like she's not acting but just playing herself. Or so I think YUI's just like that in real life. Anyways, my favorite scenes are: 1. When YUI played It's happy line first time in the film. Seeing her sing just thrilled me and made the hair at the back of my neck stand. I was really thrilled. 2. The beach scene where we last saw Kaoru alive. It was heartbreaking and sad that it almost made me cry seeing Kaoru smiling and joking with Koji even if it was so clear that she's really suffering a lot. It was so poignant! Especially when the next scene was YUI covered in sunflowers! :huhuhu I've just seen it once and am planning to see it over and over again. PS: I also think it's kinda short even if it ran for almost two hours. Or maybe I just can't get enough of YUI! (I am so sorry for the atrocious grammar! I'm just too excited to post my thoughts on the film) :horny |

I just this second got through watching it, and i loved every minute of it. It was a sad story, but a really good one too. I thought, for a newcomer, YUI's acting was great, she was definitely believable (and i don't consider it as her playing herself, even if there seem to be similarities). I will admit though, the film could have been a bit shorter, maybe just 15 minutes off the running time but it's no big deal since i enjoyed it all. A great film and one i hope to pick up on dvd if it comes with subs ^^ |

Heh, i thought the film was just perfect, cus it kinda built it up. I specially liked how the ending ended with her music. It gives it a really emotional beginning. So sad |
