Indonesia quake kills more than 3,000! Hospitals overwhelmed; power outages hinder rescuers. From one of the Indonesian newspaper, Kompas: Translated by AditZ http://www.kompas.com/kompas-cetak/0605/28/utama/2685832.htm http://www.kompas.com/kompas-cetak/0605/28/utama/2685733.htm Earthquake with a 5,9 Richter scale shaken one of our (Indonesian) most important city, YOGYAKARTA and its surroundings, Saturday (27/5) at 05.53 am till 00.15 am. Noted 3.098 victims was killed and 2.971 people among others came from Sub-Province of Bantul. The earthquake also ruined 3.824 buildings, infrastructure, and cut off telecommunications network in Yogyakarta and Bantul. This earthquake is the 2nd biggest natural disaster after tsunami tragedy in Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia on 2004. Tsunami swept away Aceh and North Sumatra, December 2004, and killed around 170.000 people. Later, on March 2005, earthquake shaken Nias and killed about 1.000 people. Victims mostly killed because of crumpled building and crashed them from above, and some other injured victims also caused by the big panics among people. Their panicities was caused by the issue of tsunami (trauma of tsunami incidents in Aceh), roadway traffic became a chaos, and many collisions and accicents resulting in citizens injured. The issue caused a mental terror among people in the area which caused in panicities. Most citizens Sub-Province of Sleman thought that the earthquake came from Merapi Mount which was active lately. As the earthquake occured, citizens go outside their house and look up into Merapi Mount. The hot cloudy Merapi Mount was believed to be the cause of the earthquake. But their assumption was wrong because the earthquake source resides in the Southern Sea. From the CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/05/2...uake/index.html The quake struck just before dawn Saturday about 15 miles (25 kilometers) south-southwest of Yogyakarta, near the volcano Mount Merapi. Most of the fatalities occurred in the Bantul district just south of of Yogyakarta. Many people were sleeping at the time, didn't have enough time to escape, and were entombed in their beds. Around 200,000 survivors were left homeless and many took refuge in makeshift tent cities. The latest death toll from Indonesia's Social Affairs Ministry of 3,295 is expected to rise, according to Reuters. Hospitals have been overwhelmed. Field hospitals have been set up and people have been treated by health care providers are on the streets. At the same time, many people were reluctant to enter hospitals because they feared structural damage caused by aftershocks. "We need more paramedics and field hospitals to take care of those who are injured," Andy Mallarangeng, spokesman for Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, told CNN on Sunday. Indonesia sits on the Asia Pacific's so-called "ring of fire," marked by heavy volcanic and tectonic activity and scientists worried about the impact of the quake on Mount Merapi, which villagers have watched closely in the past few weeks -- before the quake. Many aid workers anticipating a major eruption were stationed in the region and they have shifted their attention to earthquake relief. Relief teams who remained in the area following the massive 2004 Asian tsunami helped as well. On Sunday, two strong earthquakes were reported in the Pacific, a 6.2-magnitude quake in Papua New Guinea and a 6.7-magnitude quake in Tonga. Countries across the globe pledged monetary aid adding up to millions of dollars. The tasks of finding the dead and injured, and removing rubble from collapsed buildings are being complicated by electric power outages in the area and a shortage of earth-moving equipment and generators. Where the earthquake occured: Posted Image Luckily, I live in Jakarta and suffered nothing about the earthquake, but thanks to media that we were awared of the news. I'm thinking about the best way to help the victims there. I try to post this in the forum, and whoever want to donate, please visit: http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/05/2...aid/index.html/ Why CNN? Because I think that most of us here are outside Indonesia. And CNN is the largest international news provider and is the most accurate. Maybe you can help the ppl in Indonesia with anything you can do, althought I'm not the victim, I would greatly apprciate whoever want to help us, my country and my Indonesian brothers. Thanx for reading the full article and paying attention to this thread. :) God bless our country! |

I'm glad you're okay AditZ (I hope whoever lives in Indonesia is fine too- this is directed to everyone there of course, but mainly the people in this forum because this message by me only reaches this far...anyways... >_<) I'm sad to hear the numbers of death changed... The stupid...stupid...disasters... I'm glad to say nothing 'phenomenal disasters' has ever happened to me. To whoever who has also not suffered such things, we should give thanks becuase these things are real. I hope the numbers don't raise to 5000...that's all... >__< |
