well both teams had already kind of qualified, so it was the pefect time to play their 2nd stringers.... no need to go all out and attack and risk injuries or suspensions.... so yea... i kinda expected it.... as for fighting for 1st or 2nd place...well, i think they felt mexico or portugal wouldn't make a difference....lolz

Ok, the group standing in group A, B, C, D had been cleared:

Posted Image

So, these are the teams that had been officially qualified:
Germany. Ecuador, England, Sweden, Argentina, Netherland, Portugal and Mexico.

So these are the result I haven't post completely:

Argentina vs Netherland 0 - 0

Summary:
Argentina secured first place in Group C and a Round of 16 meeting with Mexico after a 0-0 draw with the Netherlands in Frankfurt on Wednesday, 21 June 2006.

The stalemate between two sides already assured of qualification left them tied on seven points at the top of the group, with Argentina finishing first virtue of their better goal difference. While Jose Pekerman's team move on to face Mexico in Leipzig on Saturday, the Dutch will play Portugal in Nuremberg 24 hours later.

Ivory Coast vs Serbia Montenegro 3 - 2

Goals:
19. ZIGIC Nikola (10')(SCG)
22. ILIC Sasa (20')(SCG)
15. DINDANE Aruna (37' PEN)(IVO)
15. DINDANE Aruna (67')(IVO)
8. KALOU Bonaventure (86' PEN)(IVO)

Summary:
Côte d'Ivoire produced a stirring finale to their first-ever FIFA World Cup™ adventure, coming from two goals down to clinch a stunning 3-2 win over Serbia and Montenegro.

The FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich witnessed a terrific match, one of Germany 2006's best to date, and the Ivorian Elephants thoroughly deserved the victory secured by goals from Aruna Dindane (2) and Bonaventure Kalou, after earlier strikes from Nikola Zigic and Sasa Ilic had put the Serbo-Montenegrins 2-0 in front.

As if that drama was not enough, there were also a couple of red cards in this match, with Albert Nadj's 46th-minute dismissal a key factor in tipping the balance in favour of a Côte d'Ivoire side who lost captain Cyrille Domoraud in added time.

Despite their first FIFA World Cup victory, Côte d'Ivoire finish third in Group C with three points while Serbia and Montenegro go home without a point, having conceded ten goals.

Today's matches:

Final score: Czech 0 Italy 2
USA 1 Ghana 2

Pity for the Czechs, especially for Nedved (first and last WC), who were one of the favs to go through. However, congrats to Ghana, who have silenced their critics.

What? Whit Oozora Tsubasa in, Japan will beat Brazil 10 - 0! You know that super shot is unstopable!

Japan in need of miracle!

In a daunting final game scenario, Japan must defeat defending champions Brazil to stand any chance of reaching the Round of 16 at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™.

With just one point from their two Group F games so far and a goal difference of minus two, the Blues must beat the Seleção by at least two goals to give themselves a fighting chance. Even if they were to pull off this miraculous feat, Japan would still have to depend on a favourable result in the Australia–Croatia fixture, which is being played simultaneously.

It is some task and if Zico's men are to stand any chance of beating the mighty Brazil, then their forward line must put an end to the profligacy that has hampered their best efforts so far. Their second game against Croatia offered a perfect example of Japan's chronic wastefulness in front of goal, Atsushi Yanagisawa’s glaring miss with the unguarded net at his mercy the worst of a bad bunch.

The comments of former German international Pierre Littbarski, who has played and coached in Japan, are typical of the kind of criticism that has been levelled at Yanagisawa and his fellow front men during the FIFA World Cup. "Rudi Voller would have scored that (Yanagisawa's chance) even with his leg in plaster."

What fans and experts alike are desperate to see is an improvement in Japan's ability to capitalise on their chances. One alternative available to Zico for this match against his native country is the highly-rated Masashi Oguro, who joined French second division side Grenoble in the January transfer window.

Oguro was Japan’s saviour in the final round of Asian qualifying for Germany 2006, scoring a crucial stoppage-time winner in the first game against Korea DPR. He also scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Greece at the FIFA Confederations Cup last year and grabbed a late equaliser against Brazil in the same tournament, following up after Shunsuke Nakamura’s free-kick had come back off a post.

Blessed with a tremendous will to win, Oguro thrives on scoring goals and, if he is given the opportunity to play, Brazil’s defenders would do well to remember his performance against them last June.

Further back, there are two men in the Japan team who know what it takes to beat Brazil. Midfielder Hidetoshi Nakata and goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi both played key roles in Japan’s historic victory over the Auriverde at the 1996 Olympic Football Tournament in Atlanta.

Kawaguchi pulled off a string of stunning saves on the way to the 'Miracle of Miami' ten years ago and he will head into Thursday's match in confident mood, having saved Darijo Srna's spot-kick in Sunday's goalless draw with Croatia.

Whatever heroics Kawaguchi may be capable of, though, as moment of truth approaches for Japan, all concerned will know that no amount of hope, conviction or divine intervention will get them their miracle if they cannot score goals.

EDIT:

Sadly Japan lose....I wanna cry.........

EDIT2:

Czech Republic vs Italy 0 - 2

Goals:
23. MATERAZZI Marco (26')
18. INZAGHI Filippo (87')

Summary:
Italy secured their qualification for the Round of 16 as Group E winners after beating the Czech Republic 2-0 in Hamburg on Thursday, 22 June 2006.

Marcello Lippi's side will face the second-placed team from Group F in Kaiserslautern on 26 June. The Czechs, who head home early after finishing third in the group, played the whole second half with ten men after the dismissal of Jan Polak moments before the break following a second yellow card.

Marco Materazzi, an early replacement for the injured Alessandro Nesta, put the Azzurri on course for victory when he headed past Petr Cech in the 26th minute and his fellow substitute Filippo Inzaghi sealed the three points three minutes from the end.

Ghana vs USA 2 - 1

Goals:
23. DRAMAN Haminu (22')(GHA}
8. DEMPSEY Clint (43')(USA)
10. APPIAH Stephen (47+' PEN)(GHA)

Summary:
Ghana's 2-1 victory over the USA in Nuremberg booked their place in the Round of 16 and left Bruce Arena's men facing an earlier than expected flight home from the FIFA World Cup™ finals.

The Africans took the lead in the 22nd minute when Haminu Draman robbed Claudio Reyna of possession on the edge of the area and cooly slotted the ball past Kasey Keller.

Clint Dempsey's powerful finish two minutes before half-time gave the US hope of winning the match, but they were soon behind again through Stephen Appiah's penalty, scored in the second minute of added time at the end of the first half.

Try as they might after the interval, the US could not find a way past a stubborn Ghana rearguard and leave the tournament after claiming just one point from their three group games. For Ratomir Dujkovic's Black Stars, however, a match with the winners of Group F in Dortmund awaits.

Croatia vs Australia 2 - 2

Goals:
2. SRNA Darijo (2')(CRO)
3. MOORE Craig (38' PEN)(AUS)
10. KOVAC Niko (56')(CRO)
10. KEWELL Harry (79')(AUS)

Summary:
Australia made history by twice coming from behind against Croatia to earn the point they needed to claim a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup™.

The Socceroos lost all three games in their one previous appearance on the world stage in 1974 but a 2-2 draw with Croatia in Stuttgart was enough to secure second place in Group F and a second-round tie against Italy in Kaiserslautern on 26 June. Australia finished with four points from three matches, two clear of third-placed Croatia.

On a nervy night, Croatia opened the scoring through Darijo Srna’s second-minute free-kick. Craig Moore drew Australia level from the penalty spot on 38 minutes but the balance swung back Croatia’s way when Niko Kovac’s shot was fumbled by Zeljko Zalac in the 56th minute. However, Harry Kewell struck the decisive second Australian goal 11 minutes from time.

Japan vs Brazil 1 - 4

Goals:
20. TAMADA Keiji (34')(JPN)
9. RONALDO (46+')(BRA)
19. JUNINHO PERNAMBUCANO (53')(BRA)
16. GILBERTO (59')(BRA)
9. RONALDO (81')(BRA)

Summary:
Brazil made sure of first place in Group F as they came from behind to beat Japan 4-1 through goals from Ronaldo (2), Juninho Pernambucano and Gilberto in Dortmund on Thursday, 22 June 2006.

The world champions can now look forward to a Round of 16 meeting with Ghana in Kaiserslautern on 26 June following their third straight victory at Germany 2006. For Japan, this was their second defeat in three matches and left them bottom of the section with one point.

The star of the show was Ronaldo, who scored his 13th and 14th FIFA World Cup goals to move level with German legend Gerd Muller as the tournament's all-time leading scorer. He headed Brazil level in first-half injury time to cancel out Keiji Tamada's fine 34th-minute opener for Japan.

Then, after Juninho Pernambucano (53 minutes) and Gilberto (59’) had struck superb goals to seize control of the match for Brazil, Ronaldo had the final word as he made it 4-1 nine minutes before the end.

Ukraine vs Tunisia 1 - 0

Goals:
7. SHEVCHENKO Andriy (70' PEN)

Summary:
Andriy Shevchenko’s 70th minute penalty proved to be enough for Ukraine to book their progression through to the Round of 16 as they recorded a 1-0 win over Tunisia in Berlin on Friday, 23 June 2006.

A win could have given Tunisia the runners up spot in Group H, but their task was made all the more difficult when they had striker Zied Jaziri sent-off for a second bookable offence on the stroke of half-time.

Roger Lemerre's side will depart Germany after having taken part in their third consecutive FIFA World Cup™, but 2006 also represents the third consecutive tournament that they have failed to get past the group stage.

As for Ukraine, competing in their first FIFA World Cup, they are now looking forward to a second round tie against the winners of Group G in Cologne on 26 June.

Spain vs Arab Saudi 1 - 0

Goals:
20. JUANITO (36')

Summary:
Spain advanced to the Round of 16 with a third win under their belts as they beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in Kaiserslautern on Friday, 23 June 2006.

Juanito's 36th-minute header was enough to separate the teams and confirm the Saudis' elimination after one draw and two defeats. While Marcos Paqueta's men pack their bags to go home, Spain, as Group H winners, can look forward to facing the second-placed team in Group G (one of Switzerland, Korea Republic or France) in Hanover on 27 June.

My biggest sorrow today....After Japanese, now Koreans lost.....No Asian representatives in the 2nd stage......I'm very sad....................

Korea vs Switzerland 0 - 2

Goals:
4. SENDEROS Philippe (23')
9. FREI Alexander (77')

Summary:
Goals from Philippe Senderos and Alexandr Frei clinched a 2-0 win for Switzerland over Korea Republic in Hanover on 23 June and secured top spot for Kobi Kuhn’s side in Group G.

The result, combined with France’s 2-0 win over Togo, leaves Dick Advocaat’s Taeguk Warriors facing an earlier-than-expected journey home, while the Swiss march on to a Round of 16 clash with Group H runners-up Ukraine in Cologne on 26 June.

Korea Republic may, however, consider themselves unfortunate having contributed significantly to this competitive and entertaining encounter, although the Swiss did create the game’s better chances and were more clinical in front of goal, with Frei in particular a constant threat.

Kuhn’s side finish on the summit of Group G with seven points, followed by France on five, Korea Republic on four, with Togolese, who go home without a point to their name but with pride intact, in fourth position.

France vs Togo 2 - 0

Goals:
4. VIEIRA Patrick (55')
12. HENRY Thierry (61')

Summary:
France advanced to a Round of 16 meeting with Spain after second-half goals from Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry secured a 2-0 victory over Togo in Cologne on Friday, 23 June 2006.

After a frustrating first half of missed chances, Vieira marked his 30th birthday with the breakthrough goal after 55 minutes. Henry added France's second six minutes later to give France the win they needed to progress as the second-placed team in Group G behind Switzerland.

France, whose success here was their first on the world stage since the 1998 Final, will play Spain in Hanover on 27 June. As for Togo, they return home without a point from their first FIFA World Cup campaign.

:o Korea lost? Nooooo~~~ They were so close too, darn it, darn it, darn it. And I felt bad and frustrated when I was watching the Japan/Brazil game. Japan's goalie looked like he was angry enough for his head to explode  . But I didn't really expect them to win against Brazil anyways, I was just hoping for them to at least get two goals, they were close though.

I like your prediction AditZ  . I may not be a fan of England, but I'd rather them win. I'd think it'd be really close if they went against Brazil.

Hhmmm... round of 16 is really something to look forward too... many tight matches... I'm looking forward to

Ger vs Swe
Ned vs Por
Fra vs Esp

But the thing I'm really looking forward will be the finale of Arg vs Bra... hopefully it will be both the team entering the final... juz a little adjustment to Aditz's prediction...

Spain looks tough too if they meet Brazil so another match to look forward if they beat France...

Germany and Argentina will be another interesting matchup too adding that Germany is the host country... the power of home ground should not be looked down...

England vs Ecuador 1 - 0

Goals:
7. BECKHAM David (60')

Summary:
England advanced to the last eight of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ as a second-half free-kick from captain David Beckham proved enough to secure a 1-0 victory over Ecuador on Sunday, 25 June 2006.

Beckham had not scored a goal for England for more than three years but his superb strike on the hour in Stuttgart took his team through to a quarter-final date with either Portugal or the Netherlands in Gelsenkirchen on 1 July. It also made him the first England player to score in three separate FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Ecuador, playing in the second round for the first time, missed a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the game when Carlos Tenorio broke through on goal only to see his deflected shot strike the woodwork.

Budweiser Man of the Match: John TERRY (ENG)

Defender John Terry was named the Budweiser Man of the Match after he anchored an England back line that completely smothered Ecuador's forwards on the way to a 1-0 victory.

Ecuador striker Agustin Delgado may be known for his prowess in the air but he did not have an attempt on goal during his 90 minutes on the pitch thanks to the solid work of Terry and fellow England centre-half Rio Ferdinand. In all, Ecuador only managed three shots on goal, none of them truly testing goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

The Chelsea captain, who took the armband from David Beckham when he was substituted, also contributed with his leadership, rallying his team-mates as Ecuador pushed for a late equaliser in the intense heat in Stuttgart.

"He is the Budweiser Man of the Match because he made few errors and had a perfect game in defence," said FIFA Technical Study Group member Alvin Corneal. "He made up for his team-mates' mistakes and he was the one who stopped most of Ecuador's best chances."

Argentina vs Mexico 2 - 1

Goals:
4. MARQUEZ Rafael (6')(MEX)
9. CRESPO Hernan (10')(ARG)
18. RODRIGUEZ Maxi (98')(ARG)

Summary:
Argentina needed extra time and a wonder strike from Maxi Rodriguez to give them a 2-1 victory over Mexico and a place in the quarter-finals of Germany 2006 in Leipzig on Saturday, 24 June 2006.

After a fast and furious start, Mexico took the lead with just five minutes on the clock. Pavel Pardo's free-kick from the right was flicked on by Jared Borgetti and Rafael Marquez swept the ball home at the far post.

It took just four minutes for the Albiceleste to draw level. Juan Riquelme’s corner from the right was touched in by Hernan Crespo and despite a series of chances for both sides, 1-1 was how it stayed for the remaining 80 minutes of normal time.

In the 98th minute, Juan Sorin’s fine cross-field pass was chested down by Rodriguez and the Atletico Madrid man fired home a left-footed volley to book his side a date with Germany in Berlin’s Olympiastadion on 30 June.

Germany vs Sweden 2 - 0

Goals:
20. PODOLSKI Lukas (4')
20. PODOLSKI Lukas (12')

Summary:
Germany advanced to the FIFA World Cup™ quarter-finals after two early goals from Lukas Podolski secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Sweden on Saturday, 24 June 2006.

Jurgen Klinsmann's team never looked back once Podolski had fired them in into a fourth-minute lead and, after the same player doubled their advantage eight minutes later, only the excellence of Sweden goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson prevented Germany winning by a considerably wider margin.

Sweden lost defender Teddy Lucic to a second yellow card after 35 minutes and their faint hopes of a comeback all but evaporated when Henrik Larsson blazed a penalty over the crossbar eight minutes into the second half.

Germany can now look forward to a quarter-final tie in Berlin next Friday against the winners of the Argentina-Mexico match, which takes place later this evening in Leipzig.

I think this is a good news, England got their chance to avenge their lost to Portugal in Euro 2004. England are in NEED of turning point from unconvincing team become convincing team. This is a chance for England to prove their mettle.

Btw, England altho score not as many as other teams, but most of their goals are pretty and magnificent goals. Steven Gerrard's goal when facing Trinidad, Joe Cole's stunning strike outside penalty are with a drive shoot against Sweden, and later David Beckham magnificent free-kick.

And I'll come up with the latest update:

Portugal vs Netherland 1 - 0

Goals:
18. MANICHE (23')

Summary:
Portugal progressed to a quarter-final against England after eliminating the Netherlands through a first-half goal from Maniche in Nuremberg on Sunday, 25 June 2006.

Maniche's fine 23rd-minute goal was the high point of a match tarnished by four red cards. After Portugal's Costinha was dismissed on the stroke of half-time, three other players followed him off the field in the second period: Khalid Boulahrouz after 63 minutes, Deco after 78, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst five minutes into injury time.

Portugal, who beat England in the quarter-finals at UEFA EURO 2004, will try to repeat that performance when the teams meet again in Gelsenkirchen next Saturday, 1 July.

Italy won!

Italy vs Australia 1 - 0

Goals:
10. TOTTI Francesco (95+' PEN)

An injury-time penalty from substitute Francesco Totti took ten-man Italy past Australia and into the last eight of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ in Kaiserslautern on Monday, 26 June 2006.

Totti, a 75th-minute replacement for Alessandro Del Piero, drove the spot-kick high into the net after Fabio Grosso had gone down under a Lucas Neill challenge just seconds before the final whistle.

Italy had been reduced to ten men following Marco Materazzi's red card five minutes into the second half and at that stage their followers might have feared a repeat of their loss to Guus Hiddink's Korea Republic at this stage four years ago. Instead, Totti's strike leaves the Azzurri looking forward to a quarter-final tie against either Switzerland or Ukraine in Hamburg on Friday.

As for Hiddink's Australia team, they can head for home proud of their performance in Germany, having reached the Round of 16 on their first outing on the world stage in 32 years.

Italy was very lucky, there wasn't nay fault on Grosso, it's sad for the aussies...

And Ukraine played not so bad but it wasn't a great match XD

YUI Lover & Knight!

I heardd that Italian ppl in Ausy got a fight with the Ausy citizens.

I think that the penalty was a controversy, Grosso dived himself in the box.

And for the report:

Switzerland vs Ukraine 0 - 0 a.e.t. 0 - 3 penalty shootout

Penalty Shootout:
Artem Milevskiy, Serhiy Rebrov and Oleg Gusev

Summary:
Ukraine won through to a FIFA World Cup™ quarter-final against Italy after beating Switzerland on penalties after a goalless draw in Cologne on Monday, 26 June 2006.

None of Switzerland's three penalty-takers - Marco Streller, Tranquillo Barnetta and Ricardo Cabanas - were able to convert their kicks meaning that despite Andriy Shevchenko's miss for Ukraine, Oleg Blokhin's side won the shoot-out 3-0. Artem Milevskiy, Serhiy Rebrov and Oleg Gusev all put the ball past Pascal Zuberbuehler to leave the Ukrainians looking forward to a tie with Italy in Hamburg on Friday.

Chances were at a premium during the opening 90 minutes of this Round of 16 match, but both teams at least managed to hit the woodwork. Shevchenko headed against the crossbar at one end while Alexander Frei's free-kick curled on to the crossbar at the other.

In extra time both Johann Vogel and Philipp Degen went close for the Swiss, but as the 120 minutes ended scoreless, penalties were required for the first time in this edition of the FIFA World Cup.

Yes Grosso dived! Lucas Neil was like lying on the ground already and Grosso just ran towards him and tripped himself! Maybe the referee couldn't take another 30 minutes of extra time.
