Posted on the intranet very late this afternoon was news that our MD Nigel Sibley, together with HR director Bob Mason have been made redundant as a result of consolidation within the European Wolseley operation.

Call me a cynic if you must but I believe Wolseleys current problems lie fairly and squarely with the main PLC board. Overpriced aquisitions made at a time when the Company was doing well have led to the possibility of it breaking it's banking covenants in the next financial year. The implications for all of us if that were to happen are dire so it looks like the cost cutting knife is likely to drive deeper.

I myself, and a number of our colleagues have no confidence in the current PLC board, if only we could raise our collective voice as employees and initiate a shareholder vote to review our Company leadership.

If only.

Another MD has got the chop! The next phase of HQ redundancies has happened after the re-structuring of heavy and lightside. This is the latest article from H&V News.

Wolseley changes see two more directors go
Two more senior roles have been axed as part of the latest shake up of the management structure at plumbing, heating and building materials distributor Wolseley UK. The new Commercial and Industrial Division will pull together Wolseley’s air conditioning, refrigeration, electrical and pipework supply businesses, while the new Heavyside division will integrate companies in that sector. As a result Paul Gordon, managing director of Build Center and Drain Center, has left the company with immediate effect and director Mark Eburne will leave in September. The job cuts follow last month’s announcement that Nigel Sibley, managing director of the UK and Irish division, and Bob Mason, human resources director, were leaving the company. Rob Marchbank, chief executive for Europe and Wolseley UK managing director (pictured), said the new management structures would allow the company to “align our businesses to our customers and improve our ability to leverage and utilise some of the best practices across our businesses.” He added: “Our priority will be to undertake a review of businesses’ management structures and seek to identify synergies, efficiencies and cost savings to improve our competitive position. We are doing this to increase our focus on delivering the best possible service to our customers.” The new Heavyside division will include the Build, Drain, Brandon Hire and Encon businesses and will be led by Steve Ashmore, managing director of Plumb Center and Parts Center. The new Commercial and Industrial division will cover the Climate Center, Electric Center and Pipe Center businesses and will be led by Tony Morris, previously managing director of Climate Center and Pipe Center. The changes come just two weeks after Wolseley announced the establishment of a Lightside division to oversee its plumbing and heating businesses - including Plumb Center, Parts Center, William Wilson, BCG, Unifix and Bathstore. A Wolseley UK spokesman said this was expected to be the last of the planned top level changes.

Haven't seen any news of Mr Tillotson's place in the new structure yet!

The next stage of the crunch is underway at RLS and Ripon:

The statement by Rob Marchbank is interesting. Who created the duplication in the first place?

Wolseley to lay off 84 U.K. workers
Industrial Distribution staff -- Industrial Distribution, 9/11/2008 8:05:00 AM
Wolseley plc plans to cut its workforce in the United Kingdom by 84 workers in the latest round of layoffs for the British building materials distributor, the Kenilworth Weekly News reported.

Wolseley, ranked first on INDUSTRIAL DISTRIBUTION's 2008 Big 50 list of distributors, is cutting 73 jobs at its Leamington Spa, U.K., headquarters—nearly 14 percent of the 530 people employed there—and another 11 positions at another location in Ripon, U.K.

Managing director Rob Marchbank told the newspaper the ongoing housing slump on both sides of the Atlantic is to blame.

“Given the deterioration in several of our markets, including the U.K., we have continued to take action to reduce duplication :'( and make cost savings across our operations,” Marchbank said. ”I am confident that today's changes, along with the recent establishment of our new divisional structure, will ensure we emerge from the current economic challenges equipped to successfully compete in our market places.”

It’s the latest round of cuts for Wolseley, which posted sales of $31.6 billion last year. In July, the company said it will shutter 53 of its European branches and eliminate 550 jobs, in addition to the 150 jobs and 13 branches it plans to lose in Ireland. Wolseley also said it will close up to 90 of its U.K. locations in response to the economic downturn.

Mr Tillotson went a week last Friday.

I received my official "Your position is at risk of being made redundant" letter this morning. I'm now awaiting assessment to see if I'm suitable for one of the positions remaining. I should know after the second consultation interview due in the next few days.

At least fifteen of the positions attributed to RLS are actually field based.

The redundancy package is much better than the minimum, but after over 20 years servitude it bloody well should be!

Happy days! ^o) :ermm: :-/

I have observed that online education is getting favorite because getting your degree online has become a popular selection for many people. A lot of people have certainly not had a chance to attend a normal college or university yet seek the raised earning potential and a better job that a Bachelor’s Degree gives. Still other people might have a degree in one discipline but wish to pursue one thing they now develop an interest in.
