Seems to be a bit down for a few of the usually stronger cities. The one that sticks out is Colorado, who had a 487 game sellout streak...which I believe was the longest one going in the NHL, who saw their first non-sellout in 11 years. attendance |

Well of course the fact that the Avs aren't having a power-house year yet might play a role. The Broncos aren't doing too poorly yet, and of course pre-season there's always hope for the McNuggets. I found the Chicago figures saddening. With the Bulls lately playing badly the last several years, the baseball teams done for the year, the Bears are the only other sports team (plus MLS, but who knows what they draw). Sure Chicago has had its on ice failures, and they don't seem to be too exciting. Their USHL team does very poorly in attendance too, and I just hope hockey isn't on its way out of a city so large. Then again the demographics of the city have been changing constantly, and maybe shifting away from the hockey fan. The Avs will rebound, the Kings have to, and hopefully Chicago isn't fully dead yet. |

That's interesting that you mention Chicago. I'll be in Chicago next week for work and I'll be going to the Chicago/Vancouver game. They have a deal where you can get nosebleed tickets for $8 with your student ID (which I never turned in when I graduated back in December ). Anyhow, I called the Blackhawks ticket office to see what ticket availability for the game was like and the guy on the phone told me tickets for the game are "wide open." After looking at the attendance figures, I guess his "wide open" comment makes a lot more sense.

I'll look into this just because I am interested...but I believe that Chicago has not played to capacity consistantly for some time now; I want to say for a good 10 seasons or so. I could be wrong but I seem to recall that it's been a while since that team has drawn well. |

Chicago is doing well this season, so maybe that will get some bandwagon fans out of their houses and into the United Center. The Avs were 326 short of capacity, that's what the Chicago USHL team brings in on a good Saturday night Maybe there is hope of me getting to an Avs game sometime now.

OK, looks like Chicago peaked during the mid 90's when attendance averaged 20391 for the 95-96 season...and it has slowly declined since. And I do mean every season, with the exception of the 01-02 season. So for the past 5 seasons, not counting the current season, the Hawks have averaged 14,386 fans compared to an average of 18,349 for the five seasons prior to that, during the 95-96 thru 99-00 seasons. So I was pretty close in my 10 year decline estimate. I guess the reason I kind of recall this is because I was suprised because of the memories I had back when the North Stars Blackhawks rivalry was so big. Capacitiy has changed since then and they now can fit 20,500 in the United Center since moving there in 94. |

I hate showing my ignorance, but do they even have a real rivalry with anyone anymore? I feel bad because I used to hope to get Blackhawks games on WGN, they haven't televised one in many years now, and it was balanced at one point with the Bulls. I just remember thinking the United Center was something special, and I wanted to go there someday. |

The Blackhawks owner will not televise Blackhawk games on tv because he feels it will make more fans stay home and watch instead of come out to the game and pay. |

The only other arena I've been in for an NHL game is the MCI center in DC for a few Caps games. That's a pretty blah arena - it is very multipurpose so there isn't much of an "aura" there, especially for hockey. I kind of suspect that will be the same with the United Center. It's really a shame they tore down the old Chicago Stadium or whatever it was called. From what I understand, THAT was a fantastic venue for hockey with all the tradition and whatnot. Regardless, I'm looking forward to going to the game next week. I've even managed to talk a couple of non-hockey friends into going to the game with me, so that should be lots of fun!

Yes, Chicago Stadium would have been the rink to see, with it's history and all. |

I don't remember Chicago Stadium, but I do remember when the United Center was new. |
