I heard the story as it was developing today...yeah that is sad.

How the plane managed to penetrate airspace over one of the most densely packed sections of New York City was not clear. The plane was unusual in that it was equipped with a parachute in case of engine failure, but there was no sign the chute was used.

I was wondering about that as well...I am sure that most of the air-space around NYC is closed...and I believe I heard on the local news that the plane is manufactured by a Minnesota company, Sirus or something like that.

I guess he had reported fuel problems when he took off. His wife and kid took a commercial jet home and were given the news upon arrival in California. What a way to start off your day after you get home.

It is sad. He was a good pitcher, and likely a good man (though I didn't know him).

The plane was reportedly a Cirrus. They are manufactured in Duluth. I think its Cirrus who also makes 'chutes for planes if the owner requests. I know its a company in Duluth and they're friends with Cirrus if they're not part of the actual company.

According to that ESPN article above, this plane was equiped with a chute.

This is in the article as well...but do you guys remember when Yankee catcher Thurman Munson was in the plane crash...I young but I do remember. I even pulled out his card from that year after it happened, and I believe I still have it around here somewhere.

In that article I first posted, I remember earlier it had listed other pro athletes who died in plane crashes. The list was atleast 60 deep, a lot were teams. I didn't realize how many people had died from plane crashes.

I was watching ESPN this morning, and they were showing a segment with Lidle as he was in the air and just enjoying himself. He said he could have the worst day, and then go fly and it all went away. Atleast he died doing something he absolutely loved.
