Game reports; Who does them?

I was just wandering who is in charge of the match reports on the Heat website?

I don't think they have ever heard of proof reading. They all have mistakes in and the grammar is poor too. Last seasons were much better IMO.

Don't know who does them - but I'm guessing it's a volunteer who makes time to do it in order to support the club.

As I can't get to many away matches I'm grateful for that time, grammatical errors or not.

Thank you, whoever you are!

I am not at all ungrateful for them and I am also sure that a volunteer does them, it would just be nice if they could read it themselves before publishing it!

STOP PRESS! WORLD ENDS due to a few spelling mistakes.

jeez the club like most BBL teams is run by volunteers other than the players and a few backroom staff NO ONE gets paid. WHY NOT volunteer to do the match report yourself??? or help out in any other way.

Have to agree - if you can do better, why not contribute? Perhaps offer your services as a proofreader??

I was once pulled up for writing "cue" instead of "queue" - those of you who know me will have already guessed that the air turned a very dusky shade of deepest blue!!!
All in all it's been a rocky road,
Twists and turns along the way,
But, I still pray for tomorrow
All my hopes, my dreams
Don't fade away...

Constructive criticism is not a bad thing - the vast majority want to follow the Heat, not work for them. Anything that makes following the team easier/better is a good thing.

Whilst I agree that anyone who volunteers should be applauded and given as much encouragement as possible, I think we should all remember that this is the PREMIER basketball league in this country and is viewed as 'professional'.

I have not read the reports so I have no idea how many inaccuricies there are in the report but I believe the point about proof reading is valid.
I know how difficult it is to write for a clubs web-site, I did it over the summer for Lions- and I spent longer initially correcting the original version than writing it!! And it was still far from perfect, but I wasn't giving a club report.

If the league truly wants to be taken seriously then subjects like consistent faults in clubs reports need to be addressed.

Queue the insults!!! :)

Very well-put post Saintpat. The BBL/Club is as professional as the public perceives it to be - so output into the public domain is hugely important.

Because as Punder and Saintpat allude to - perhaps the OP doesn't want to. And of course clubs wouldn't really work if everyone was a volunteer.

When clubs put things out for public consumption then it is only natural that the public will judge the club based on what they see.

My insult is queued, and will be unleashed once I reach the front of the queue !!!

Should people who misuse cue/queue be banned from ever writing for BBL clubs again? Quickly ducks for cover before Ole moderates me !!!

By the way its a joke before anybody gets too heavy handed.

In fairness it is difficult getting a balance between operating as a professional club and the need for volunteers. Ideally it is probably best to raise constructive criticisms directly with the club/individual rather than on the internet, but I have raised issues on Whatsbev myself, so I don't necessarily do what I preach. The reality is the BBL can only run as a professional operation due to the presence of volunteers and therefore I try and keep my criticisms to club matters (e.g. I was critical of the Heat's European pricing structure, but that was aimed at the organisation rather than a volunteer).

In the end it is the responsibility of the clubs employed officials / owners to ensure that anything appearing on the official website is neither detrimental to the organisation nor gives a negative impression. In this instance it is those people who should proof read if the club feels it is important. Personally errors don't worry me, I'm more appreciative that somebody has put in the effort to provide something extra for the club / BBL / sport.

While I agree that the club needs to portray as professional an image as it can, I know as a volunteer for the Heat that it is a balancing act. Those of us who do volunteer are all very busy individuals who do the best we can in the time we have available and those who are actually paid employees end up putting in far more hours than they are paid for.

The problem, as always, is money. The BBL and its clubs do not generate enough revenue to pay for everything that needs to be done, so all the clubs have to rely on volunteers who have far too much to do. I regularly say "no" to the club because I am doing to much already.

I could raise the issue of the website reports, but the simple answer is that we don't have enough time. Sure, it doesn't take long to proof-read something like a match-report for the website, but who is going to volunteer to do that, week-in-week out, at 11 o'clock on a Friday evening, or first thing on Saturday morning, or whenever it is needed?. It's not just the time it takes, it's also when it needs to be done. We could always wait until Monday morning when everyone's in the office, but then we'd get criticised for not keeping the website up-to-date.

I agree that we're not perfect, but we're doing the best we can and the simple solution is for more people to volunteer to help out.

Thanks,
Brian.

you're dead right though - you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. Just carry on doing the great job that all BBL volunteers do eh?

Like I said before, I don't want to write the reports......as well as not being at all of the matches I don't get the time for it, just thought that a little CONSTRUCTIVE criticism isn't a bad thing??.........

And before anyone else has a pop at me for 'not volunteering' I have done since day one and will continue to do so for as long as I can. But lets not go into that.

I wasn't having a pop at anyone for not volunteering. I was, however, making the point that we do need more volunteers.

I appreciate that not everyone has the time or inclination to volunteer and that's fine. We also need supporters too: without you guys turning up to watch the games, there would be little point in any of us doing what we do!

Brian.
