This has recently been launched http://www.seetickets.com/ticketsfortroops/ Should the BBL get involved making tickets available for the various finals? Perhaps individual clubs could get involved? |

This sounds like a fantastic idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anything that the BBL and individual club's can do would be great. This is such a worthy cause. |

Whilst wanting to not offend anyone, I don't think the BBL or individual clubs should. I completely disagree with someone being given tickets for free because of their profession. |

Great idea, this just reflects the way they treat their service personnel in the U.S. - with the repect they deserve! Edited by FATBALLER, Nov 6 2009, 05:19 PM.

Im a bit cynical about this : I think the troops would welcome proper equipment before sports tickets. |

Yes but none of us on here can give us that can we, in fact if Alistair Darling said 5p on the pound for more/better equipped troops in Afganistan we'd most probably say XXXX right off! As has been pointed out US Theme Parks invite the service personel in for free, at Seaworld a couple of years ago there was a round of appluase for US and coallition troops i.e. our brave men & women too. I would say absolutely we should invite them in, whether it's up to the clubs to pay or whether an "optional" levy on the ticket price to pay for tickets, anything unspent goes to Help For Heroes"? |

It's a good idea and as stated, the offerings would not be instead of equipment because they'd be coming from organisations that can't provide that. In the case of the BBL they couldn't even donate the money that the tickets would be worth instead, because we'd be talking peanuts. I imagine there would be a reasonable take up on the offer - no doubt a lot of them would sooner go to football or rugby but everyone likes a freebie and Im sure there are some basketball or just general sports fans in the army who would be happy to get the day out with a friend or loved one. It might even get the BBL a bit of positive press coverage too...

I am also very sceptical. What about all the other so called 'deserving' people like fireman and police officers who are maimed and in dangerous professions they have chosen to enter? I back our troops, of course I do but I think they have more important things to be worrying about than saving a few quid to watch a BBL game. Too gimmicky for me |

Glad I'm not the only one. It's all too much of a PR stunt for me. I think the word 'hero' is bandied around all too freely too tbh. |

To be fair firemen and policemen do not have to be away from their families and friends for months at a time living in pretty crap conditions, eating rubbish food and at daily risk of being blown up. Yes there are dangers in their professions but not on the same level as the troops face. I also think once they are back home, relaxing and enjoying the time off is exactly what most of them worry about, they want to make the most of the time here so to have a day out to a sports event would be quite welcome for a lot of them. I know from local press how many troops literally get home and are straight to the pub, and why not? One article was actually focussed on a pub that offered troops a free pint on their return, which is kind of the same thing as this but smaller scale. They don't want to spend their spare time worrying about what happened out there or the next time they have to go. |

Yes - lots of public servants suffer as a result of their jobs but most get to go home every night after the job. Our service personnel don't. They get to not go home for months at a time. And even off duty they aren't safe when on operations. And their families are worried from the time they leave our shores until they get back. Is it a gimmick to give reduced price tickets? Yes - all sports are eager for good PR and why not. Is it a token of our appreciation for what our service personnel go through? I hope so. Is it a tiny vote of thanks to the service personnel and their families, for the sacrifices they make? It ought to be And did I mention that lots of them don't do a single tour but most do several tours? So yes - let's give them a token of our appreciation. Edited by Will, Nov 7 2009, 09:59 PM.

I think there is also the issue of if we dont it, why not and what are we going to do instead (probably nothing) - I know which side of that fence I'd prefer to be on. |
