I'm going to be contributing regular articles to http://gbbasketball.net covering the Brits playing for NCAA Divison I teams - my first post can be found at: http://badaball-boards.com/gbbasketball/?p=1739 Players I'm planning to cover so far are: Justin Robinson (Rider) Matthew Bryan-Amaning (WashU) Jamie Vanderbeken (Iowa State) Ben Allison (Davidson) Eric Boateng (Arizona State) Morakinyo (Mike) Williams (Duquesne) Ben Eaves (Rhode Island) Ashley Hamilton (Loyola Marymount) Devan Bailey (Central Connecticut State) Just wondering - is there anyone else I've missed who you guys would like to hear about? |

You do seem to have enough to keep you occupied, but another one could be Sam Fernley who is at Fairleigh Dickinson. |

There are loads of guys depending on the purpose of the list. There are probably half a dozen in the NEC alone of which only two have already been mentiioned. Not mentioned - Rich Clark, Clayfell Harris, Phil Waite, Lawrence Brown Then there's the current crop from GC which I think is another 4 Brits, Menelik Watson, Dan Thompson, Faz Alihodiz, Ben Daniels. Ben Mockford and probably loads more. If its about players who have a chance of playing in 2012 then scrub the vast majority of the names mentioned. |

Great piece by the way - Anyone with Twitter can get updates when new articles are uploaded - along with a weblink by following gbbasketballnet Good stuff on all Brits abroad - Europe, NBA as well as stuff on the BBL and EBL. It's a good site. I am trialing a Twitter feed for itbut so far it only has 7 followers - although retweeting sends it to more folk. But it needs more followers to make it a worthwhile feed. If you Tweet get following and make sure these great GB Basketball features recieve a wider audience |

Thanks guys, this is all really helpful. It's true that there are a lot to cover of players to cover, so I'll have to prioritise. I have to admit I know very little about most of the players you've mentioned - do any of them have even a faint hope at making the GB team in 2012 or beyond? I've noticed we have two more U-20 players who will be freshmen on decent teams this year - Andy Lawrence (College of Charleston) and Patrick Nyeko (Nevada) - so I'm considering adding them to the list. And I've jumped on the Twitter bandwagon! |

The 2 ex GC Brits at Fordham have done well in their debut even if it was a bit of a mismatch http://www.fordhamsports.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/110509aaa.html |

SID23. Interesting that you are only looking at Div 1 athletes. Last season: Fordham were 1-15 in Conference Loyola were 2-12 in Conference Arazona State 11-7 in conference Rider 12-6 in Conference Rhode Island were 11-5 in Conference Washington 14-4 in Conference In comparison: Syracuse were 11-7 in Conference and just lost to Le Moyne, Div2 North East 10 (6th place in Conference last season) http://www.northeast10.org/sports/mbkb/index Mmmmm........... I think that says some thing about the top end of Div 2 and the Bottom end of Div 1 |

That's certainly an interesting result, especially as Syracuse were ranked 25th nationally in pre-season polls. It was an exhibition game, though, and I imagine it's the exception rather than the rule - how many other Div II teams beat Div I teams in their exhibition games this week? There are undoubtedly some very good Div II teams, and perhaps the top and bottom of each are comparable - though that's something that'd be pretty hard to measure. Unfortunately there are just too many players to cover and I've had to draw the line somewhere. It is a little bit arbitrary - and I've since had to make it even more arbitrary by excluding players (Bailey, Hamilton) in low-major Div I conferences like the NEC and America East, because there were too many of them. That said, if there are any guys playing in Div II or low-major Div I who you think will come into contention for the GB squad in the future, I'd be happy to bend the rules and follow their progress as well. In the meantime, parts 2, 3 and 4 of my preview have been posted: http://j.mp/3HOCzO http://j.mp/2ZQeuH http://j.mp/2zitjh |

SID23, I am reliably informed from an American player who has played Div 2 that the top end of Div 2 often beats mid to lower end Div 1 teams. I have no reason to disbelieve this based on the Syracuse result and conversations I have had with our colonial friends. I have read the links you posted. Can you explain your thinking why you chose those to follow and not others. Some players that have little or no Div 1 experience to those who are in their senior year and who have been well documented to those who possibly looked to play lower down the Div to get more court time and make bigger steps forward. Is it hieght, (as we don't seem to be short on height, exuse pun), is it a shot? What are you looking to follow? FS

The idea is to keep tabs on players who may one day end up playing for the senior GB team. All the players featured thus far have two things in common: 1. They have been involved in the GB set-up at a high level (either the senior squad in 08 and/or 09, or the U-20 final 12 in 08 and/or 09) 2. They play in a major, high-major or mid-major Division I conference. This doesn't make for a perfect system. But I don't think it's a bad place to start from. It's possible I may have missed players who fit this criteria. It's also possible that this criteria unfairly excludes players who will have a shot at playing for GB in the future. Please do let me know of any specific players who you think should be included. |

Sid, don't entertain these people. It is your topic and you post what you see fit. It makes perfect sense to me who you are covering, and I enjoy being able to keep up to date on the college players. |

SID23, Thanks for your explanation and straight forward reply and reasoning. The origonal point I made was refering to the "(Divison 1 only)" statement in the thread and why so narrow a veiw on how players are developing. You have clarified your veiw and it has its merits and i apprieciate the time that it takes to accumulate this information. On other links we have many a contributer that makes reference to the national selection and those who have been side stepped or even ignored when it comes to selection from U14 through to U20. This is often seen in the eyes of some as unfair. We also get those who support the selection of the State side players and those who do not. It seems that we would be disriminating against those who have worked very hard to get State side and then pushed aside without consideration. Maybe we should have a topic for "Division 2, 3 and any other prospects" . I thank you again for your reasoning & reply SID23. I also would like to say that I thought this forum was here to debate? So I do not understand why the other contibuters to this topic are waving their handbags about. Debate..................... FS

Thanks funkysneakers. I'm aware that there are politics (or perceived politics?) around who is and who isn't selected for the GB junior teams. But sitting - as I do - well outside the whole situation, it's very difficult to judge which players miss out on selection for the junior teams for political reasons and which miss out because they simply weren't good enough. Also, I'd welcome a 'Div II/Div III/other' thread. The more discussion we have (either here or on gbbasketball.net) of British basketball players at all levels, the better. |

I guess when you started you did not know how many players were involved. I wish you all the best with the articles. When you have the time you should check out Raheem May-Thompson, he thought he was going back to high school in July but he had enough high school credits and is now at Quinnipia. He may not fall into your criteria but would make an interesting story |

Syracuase isn't a mid-major as some seem to be suggesting, they're a perennial Big East powerhouse, who have had some uneven performances since winning the national championship in 03 but regularly have success in the toughest conference in the USA. One fluke result doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. |
