In which case then every posession is an infringement by every team as every post player I have seen this season has only placed one foot outside of the key to reset the count! |

Obviously not been watching the same teams I have then! I had actually been thinking that (with one or two exceptions) players didn't seem to be staying in the paint as much as in the past couple of seasons. Perhaps there is not so many natural centres in the league this year, rather PFs who are just as happy on the perimeter as in the paint?

A funny call came against me in a scrimmage game last week - I drew a charge on a guy going to the basket for a layup - we were policing ourselves and he missed because of the contact so we just carried on, but he started saying something about me being too close to the basket to get the call! As I noted, there's no half circle in the key here, that's just an NBA thing. But I think that is a bit of a problem with the sport, the rules are not global and change from one place to the next.

James7, whilst I realise you were in agreement that StPat was being pedantic, why post an entire diatribe on how poorly some violations are policed by the migs, yet when you are completely disproved, still accuse the migs of not blowing 3 seconds correctly...a rule which you clearly don't understand anyway?! Isn't that a tad hypocritical? It really just proves the point that I've been saying on here for a couple of years...we might sit in the bleachers and know the game, we might have played and / or coached for years, but the truth is, we DON'T always know the rules (and more importantly, how they should be interpreted as well as the referees!). Unless of course James7 can show us the errors in Icky's post? I've just looked it up online and it seems to me Icky is 100% correct! I'm not saying we aren't entitled to an opinion, but we just need to remember that sometimes our opinion is through rose-tinted glasses!!! AS-H, you are right I think Alan...less true centres = a more perimeter style of basketball = less time in the paint! Sam, great point about different rules mate...we have different rules in different parts of the world it seems...crazy situation!! At a game at Worthing recently, there was uproar when a 5-second violation was called with 30 seconds to go against Worthing for not releasing the ball...what everybody conveniently forgot to mention was that Reggie Bratten (sorry if that's spelt wrong!) was calling for a 20-second time out...because that's what they are taught to do in the States when trapped presumably. Again, look it up, the referees would (and possibly should) have called a technical foul against Worthing for calling a time-out when they had already used them all up. Ok, hypothetical I know as nobody would really call that...all I'm saying is that Bratten got into a situation and went to his instinctive bail-out philosophy. How can we play the same game under different rules? Incidentally, that's why I think the officials were right to call a 5-second call on that play...ok, it might have only been 4.6 seconds or something in real terms, but it was the right thing because of Bratten's 'indiscretion'! By the way, I think the no-charge zone officially comes into the rules after the 2012 olympics...I might be wrong on that, but I know it isn't in yet that's for sure. Personally, I will be intrigued to see how British Basketball introduces the no-charge zone, the new key and the extended 3-point line. Where teams own their own gym (like Spain, Greece, Germany etc.) it is easy, but how will we go about funding the changes to publicly owned gyms?
