For many years the Sharks were the yardstick, upon which all other clubs gauged themselves, That Mantle over the last 4/5 years has been taken onboard by the Eagles, who have dominated the BBL in that time. However hard other clubs ( Heat / Raiders / Jets ) have tried to assume that mantle, they have not really been dominant, whilst Sharks have unsuccessfully tried sticking to their tried & tested ethos, we have struggled to attain that level that we held 1995 - 2002. However , I firmly believe that this cuurent Sharks team, is the dawning of that re-emergence, not just because of the results, but because of the attitude of the players, and the style of play. The hard nosed defence , with the mantra of keeping opponents to below 80, The team game, depicted typically by Tapps, v Rocks , when being 3 feet from the hoop, and on a roll , as the defender steps towards him, he unselfishly dishes the pass to Mike for the easy 2, rather then going for his trademark BIG DUNK over the defender. The fast break , by all 3 guards The excellent vision of Ryan with his split second quick passes. Attibas hard nosed all round play. And a determination to scrap out the result in the not so technical games. I know its early , and we have still to see how we close out tight games , or O/T games . But the seeds of that are deffinately there. Fridays game against Eagles , will for the Sharks still be a game by which we will be measuring our climb back, but for me I will be looking for other indicators, not just the result ( although that will be hugely important ), I think it could well be a pivotal game to establish this seasons pecking order, and I think the Sharks are about to emerge from the fringes , and resume that higher status. I dont think a W for the Sharks will in itself signal that ( although I hope it does ). But this game I think should signal to ourselves , how far we have come , & what remains to be done . The End of season player retention, will be huge in the Big Picture going forward, but I'm confident Fridays game, will cement my opinion that .......................... The Sharks are Back. God I cant wait for Friday 7:30

I think we will know more in a fortnight when the sharks and eagles have played each other twice. If either of those teams wins both they will have teh head to head and effectively have 3 losses advantage on the other. |

I am pleased about the re-surgence and the ability to grind out wins on the road coupled with some relatively comfortable home wins. Friday will be alltogether a different test though. Newcastle IMHO are still the strongest team in the league; even though they are a little weaker than last year I feel. They are legit deep 1-8 and any one of those players could score 20 points. I think they may be a bit strong for us THIS EARLY IN THE SEASON I actually think we may come up short Friday but am not too worried if we do as most of Newcastle's team have been together for quite a while. Ours is effectively is a new team (TC did not play last year much, Gorman has not featured this year). However, by the end of the season I expect if improvements continue for us to be able to battle teams like the Eagles very close. All I look for Friday is we can lay ahrd as we have done and keep with the Eagles till the end of the game and then who knows? I think a top 4 finish this year and to be in with a shout of silverware and hopefully get a cup would be a massive improvement on the last few years. As you say they main thing is getting back to sharks basketball, hard nosed defence, ball movement and better shot selection. I like the fact we have a point guard who makes smart decisions mostly, a big man who rebounds/plays defence and a guard who does a bit of everyhting and is the effective go-to-guy who can create his own shot. Hopefuly Gorman will get more minutes this weekend. A frontline of Toney, Gorman, Cauthorn, Lyons is very strong; especially defensively. |

End of the half - Eagles up 42-31. If we get anything out of this it won't be because we beat the Eagles - we've to beat the refs first! Q1 they were fine - some very lopsided calls in Q2! |

After the last two weekends, we are probably better placed to make a more accurate assessment of the Sharks chances this year. What I can see: We have suffered so far due to injuries We are playing as a team and play team defence hard We are getting better and more committed performances from all over the court and the bench We have proven match winners We can tough out results and hang in with the quality teams in this league I think we have the potential to get home court advantage in the playoffs, above that will depend on the injury situation. I think we perhaps are one player away from being amongst the title favourites but would love to be proved wrong. |
