To steal a phrase from last night's stand in game commentator Mr Mike Shaft "Oh Baby!!".
Fantastic game at the Northgate last night with a well deserved win from Jets, I won't go too deep into the game analysis as there are people a lot better versed in that type of thing than myself who I'm sure will do that.
One of the regular things that seems to happen at Jet's games is we seem to start off well in the first half of games and then in the 3rd qtr seem to lose momentum. Last night's half time score with Tigers leading 45 - 54, in all honesty left me and other Jets faithful with that gut feeling of here we go again, in the first qtr there was 5 lead changes with Tigers taking the first qtr 21 - 25.
Second half of the game the Jets pulled off an 18pt turnaround! The usually dreaded 3rd, Jets scored 30 , Tigers managed 17 with the score at the end of the 3rd at 75 - 71, to Jets. Beginning of the 4th Tigers came out with a 12 - 2 run to retake the lead at 77 - 83 horrible feeling of deja vu, thankfully once again the guys proved me wrong by retaking the lead with their own run of 13 - 4 and from then on we never looked back final score being a creditable and well deserved 101-92 win to the3 men in black.
I can't remember Jets shooting free throws so well (in the past very often an Achilles heel), Jets shot 88.5% 23/26, Tigers could only manage 56.3% 9/16.

All credit to Mike Shaft for his commentary and getting the crowd going, I will admit myself to having doubts about Mike doing the commentary for a home Jets, once again I was proved wrong!

Great atmosphere at the Northgate last night and a very enjoyable game (especially if you happen to be a Jets fan!).

Here's my take on last night's game. I thought from an atmosphere point of view, it was as good as it has been for years - despite a smaller than usual crowd - presumably because of it being a Saturday! This report will also eventually appear on the Jets Website

The Jets earned the first set of bragging rights for the north west as a result of an impressive 101-92 home win against the Everton Tigers and in the process moved into a share of second place in the BBL . The Northgate was really rocking at the end of this enthralling contest and the outcome was never really certain until the dying minutes of the last quarter. “Bringing on back the good times” seemed to be the verdict of the delighted faithful on the bleachers, and while that might be just a tad premature, there can be no doubting that the level of excitement and commitment provided by both teams has been rarely witnessed since the Jetwash days!!!

The first quarter did not really give any real suggestion as to the final outcome as the lead changed hands six times up until the final minute and a half of the period when Jets had just taken the lead at 21-20 courtesy of a smooth as silk trey from Chez Marks. This seemed to tread on the metaphorical Tigers’ tail, and BBL rookie Jerome Gumbs burst into action and produced a 5-0 burst all on his own to close out the period 21-25 in the visitors’ favour.

The Tigers did not relinquish the lead throughout the second quarter. Although the ebb and flow of the play seemed pretty much equal, the Tigers shooting , especially from outside the arc saw the lead gradually increase . Both Kevin Bell and James Jones struck from downtown twice during the quarter, with the result that the Jets trailed by nine (45-54) at half time.

In recent times, the “third quarter effect” has blighted the Jets’ performances and impressive first half efforts have been nullified by indifferent or even disastrous openings to the second half – so there was some trepidation on the bleachers about the possible outcomes of this game. A five point gap from the first, virtually doubled in the second did not bode well! O you of little faith!!! Jets, prompted by a sudden boost to the tempo of the offense by point guard Paul Peterson, who hit two threes on his way to eight personal in the stanza and crucial contributions by Chez Marks and the ever more impressive Colin O’Reilly, produced 21-8 tear and a 66 -62 lead in the first six and a half minutes of the third. Tigers halved the remaining minutes of the period – but even so the home team took a four point lead (75-71) into the final stanza. From a nine point deficit this was a mighty performance!

But this game still had more twists and turns to come! Tigers came out roaring in the fourth and led by Olu Babalola who proved his versatility by scoring with a bank shot from close range, a might slam from a Bell assist, and a well judged trey. produced a 12-2 beginning to the fourth quarter to re-take the lead at 77-83. Maybe it was going to be a case of the “fourth quarter effect! – But no –the Jets came flying back with a 13-4 burst of their own, including two crucially timed outside shots, executed coolly by Colin O’Reilly which put them back on top 90-87 on top for a lead that they were never to lose again. It was the Tigers who were forced to chase the game to win back the initiative – and this entailed fouling to try to regain possession. Three times Paul Peterson was fouled as he brought the ball up, three times he went to the line and six times the string swished as he claimed his charity contributions! Tigers had no more questions to ask and so the victory was sealed by a Frank Phifer unopposed lay up to bring up the Jets century and send the fans home happy

Understandably Jets coach Paul Smith was delighted with the win: “It was a powerful performance by us, especially in that crucial third quarter, and it is all the more pleasing that after losing every time to Everton last season we’re able to get a victory on the board at the first time of asking.”

Good report and a good game - Colin O'Reilly is really stepping up from when I came over to watch you guys play MK.

I thought he looked good and solid but looked to be finding his feet - great promise but really seems to have adapted quickly.

Peterson I was criticising at the break to some Jets mates for his lack of D - second half he proved me wrong!!!

Flo was awesome for us in the first as was Jerome - both had quiter second half's - IMO Flo was being wrestled out of the game by Hamilton - Refs could have called fouls on every defense but being a smart veteran Hamilton ensured they were all off the ball and was working the Refs well.

Deserved win for the Jets and despite the discomfort of the loss it was a treat to watch O'Reilly in such blistering form. Hope you guys equally enjoyed watching Flo!

We are really being treated to some exciting basketball at the Northgate so far, and this is coming from a team that in my opinion has still not fully gelled although not far off. I agree with the Mayor, Colin O'Reilly is a major coup for us, his performances have been top draw and is growing in confidence with each game. Our opposition has provided us with some entertaining newcomers to the BBL, indeed Flo Larkai for the Tigers was superb as was Hilleary and Valencia for Raiders the previous weekend. All in all good times ahead for us Jets fans if this is the level of Basketball we can expect to watch. :clap
